Not so much.

For a fully armed and equipped fighter, 460 kph is an outstanding achievement with a 500 hp engine.

An outstanding achievement maybe, but a useless one.
Instead of spending time/money on this one, they should have spent more effort on producing more Dewoitines, or more equipements (gunsights ...).

they should... they could... all unfair expressions, now, 70 years after.

they should have invaded germany when their men and equipment were in poland...
they should have developped a nuke and bombed berlin...

who knows...?

Good point, I must clarify :
French aeronautic before wwII and during the campaign of France is a subject that fascinates me.
I use the term "should" because the fact that the Caudron 714 would be a failure as a fighter was written by people who were in the decision process but whose judgements were not taken into account.

About the invasion of Germany in september 39, this was attempted and the reasons for the offensive failure are very interesting (german use of mines, superior psychological warfare ...).

the caudron cr760 was a much better than the cr714. performancewise it was close to the 109e4. the french already built one and this was found by the germans after the invasion.. so who knows, if the germans have attacked later?! ... ;)

Yes, but it was pointed out that the frecnh would have aligned :
- The D520 serie
- The MB150 serie
- The Arsenal VG33 serie
Not counting the export aircraft (H81).

Compared to the German : 109 only
and the UK : Hurricane + Spifire

Huge logistical problems were to be expected (and actually a rationnalization was underway, which led after the armistice to the production of the D520 only).

Anyway, the Caudron 714 is a very interesting plane

Super, thanks for opening doors for skins!

And what a line-up: The Caudron, A Dewoitine and the Arsenal. Battle for France just need a twin-engined bomber, and then everything is perfect!

... well I could ask for 3 of them : Breguet 693 (assault), Potez 63-11 (recognition) and  LeO 45 (bomber)    ;)
