Star Wars IX (9 to you and me...) (no spoilers)
« on: December 22, 2019, 03:49:38 PM »

Greetings,

I was a 7-year old boy when I watched "Star Wars," now known as "A New Hope" or episode IV (4 to you and me...) in 1977.  I saw it in Londrina, a major town in the state of Parana in Brazil.  As usual, it was a rainy evening.  The reason I wanted to see the movie was that I saw a picture of a bantha, being obsessed with dinosaurs, I thought it was a pre-historic movie.  Then I saw a preview of it... that scene of Luke and Han running through the Death Star, then I thought:  "Oh my God!  Space dinosaurs and man-robots!"  I had to see it.

When eventually I watched the movie, my mind was blown.  I may have been the most obsessed Brazilian boy when it came to Star Wars.  My parents (actually my mom really) tried several interventions... to no avail.  I was hooked.

As I sat in the theater earlier today with my wife (who also had Star Wars as a faithful companion through her life), and my kids, it dawned on me that this was a journey of almost 40 years.  Lots of things have happened in my life.  Moving to different countries, dealing with life and death, meeting and leaving people, making right and wrong choices, realizing your place in the universe may not be what you thought it was going to be.  You know... life in general.

To put it in context, I am a huge fan, and I read many of the books and comics, and played most of the games, including the not so successful series of role playing games.  I am a Star Wars fan.

Suddenly, "A long time ago.  In a Galaxy far, far away..."  The allergies must have gotten to me because you know... there were a few tears.  Yes, it was allergies damn it!

I lived and perhaps suffered through the first trilogy, and the last two movies (which I enjoyed more than the first trilogy).  I avoided all spoilers somehow, because I like to make my own informed opinions, not what other people tell me.

As a long time fan, I enjoyed the last movie.  It ties many loose ends.  It rights many perceived wrongs, in my opinion.

Damn it the allergies!!!

All I can say is that I will buy it when it comes out in streaming and blue ray.  It was 2.5 hours long, and it did not feel like it.  It was a captivating experience.  Sorry if I offend anyone but there were no Jar-Jars or Rose Ticos (well, in a position to divert the plot) to spoil the mood or story.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, lifting a rock using the force was something mystical and extraordinary. I shall remain forever in that galaxy :)

I went to the cinema in 1986. On episode 4. At that time there was something to see. But what is there to look now ???
This is the first.
Now secondly:
The philosophical idea of identifying things that seem opposite, which was shown with the help of symbolism in 1977, and which was declared open text in episode 8, is now discarded and buried!

Star Wars IX - The Demise Of Skywalker.
that's my take - the movie isn't terrible in and of itself, but it's an absolute disgrace to the original trilogy.

In socialist GDR we had the pleasure to get west german tv frequencies when our household
spy was on vacation. He would check the antenna cable every hour, listening to footsteps
in the chairway. 70% of the time you had no frequencies, 30% was when this dude was inoperable for
some reason or too drunk to walk, hehe.
I remember that being VI with the furry Ewoks, watched it with my grandpa, granny slept, parents out in the opera.
Before my Cousins collected the Bravo Magazine on Star Wars Cinema receptions, which I kept
as a secret. Only in 1989, in Hungary via Satellite I could watch the Series free and full long with my parents.
My dad even stating he saw all 3 in hungarian Cinemas from 1977 till 1983 :P

Star Wars, later came Star Treks,

Vaders Theme is my cellphone incoming call tune, da-da-da-da-daaaa

I too am a Star Wars fan (since 1979, was 9 years then). Later when those first movies came out in VHS, I would be watching them over and over again, had no trouble spending entire days watching them. I also liked the prologue-movies, apart from AOTC's. I'm still a fan after the latest Disney-trilogy, I just "amputated" the last trilogy "out" of my personal Star Wars fan-zone and now I'm good again with SW-universe ;)

Nothing will ever be good enough for a Star Wars fan.  That is a hard thing to live up to.  I think many people already made up their minds that they are not going to like whatever comes up next, so it is hard to please anyone.  I had a hard time with the first trilogy but realized it was my own bias... my kids LOVE it.  There is probably a different frame of mind.  In the end of the day, it is a story that whether you like or not, crosses a generational divide.  It does not belong to you/us just because you saw it first.  It is whatever it evolves to, just like time itself, and the world.

I salute the last movie because I think that in a way the JJA realized he had a great responsibility to end this well, and I think it did well, for all it is worth.

Merry Christmas.

Considering the last 2 movies in the franchise, they certainly had to work hard to please me and many others with this 'final' episode, well they succeeded and certainly redeemed themselves. I just wish they had put as much effort into the trilogy as they have with the live action Mandalorian series... if you haven't seen that and are a SW fan, it is a MUST SEE.

Merry Christmas to all

When I saw the first one in 1977, I never imagined that it would take 40-some-odd years to finish the story!
In the beginning it was 3 years in between movies and then the long hiatus.  It's been a life-long story with anticipation for every one.  The 9-movie story may be coming to an end but the Star Wars universe stories will continue - Nice!

I expected a lot of negative comments because Star Wars fans, like myself, are pretty peculiar about depictions, and etc.  I still like the last one of the "Skywalker" movies.

I'll say that the Disney+ "Mandalorian" series absolutely blew me away.  I have been waiting all my life for a good TV series based on Star Wars, and they did well.  Me and my wife ditched HBO (Game of Thrones, burn in hell!!!!) and got Disney+ and we have used it more in 2 weeks than HBO in 2 years.

OK... so back to the Star Wars movie... the last one...

Like I said, I am an OBSESSED STAR WARS FAN.  all my life really.  So my references may not be familiar but I think the "Dark Empire" series of comics are pretty well known...

So....  did anyone think that the last movie sorta got their plot from the first Dark Empire super comic collection...?????
