Pappy's Campaign (Actually a pack of single missions)
-by JMarso

README
Back in the 90’s Jane’s Combat Simulations came out with a great game called WW2 Fighters. It shipped with a mission builder, so I created a 10 mission pack for the P-51D. The missions were loosely linked in a story line centered around the protagonist, who I named ‘Pappy’ for lack of a better moniker. The missions floated around online for several years and Jane’s even sent me a pack of WW2 Fighters playing cards as a thank-you for submitting content for the game. It was pretty cool.

Fast forward to now, and we have IL2 1946 with the B.A.T. mod, which is worlds better. I’ve generated a lot of single missions for this mod and decided to redo Pappy’s Campaign bigger and better than ever, and this time with a more proper historical context. The result is a pack of 18 single missions. Pappy is still the protagonist, now assigned to the 487th Fighter Squadron, 352nd Fighter Group- the ‘Blue Nosed Bastards of Bodney.’ The missions take place while the squadron is based at Asch during the Battle of the Bulge and shortly thereafter.

Installation

Requirements: B.A.T. mod for Il-2 1946 updated to v3.3 Pathfinder.

The zip file includes an ‘IL-2 Sturmovik 1946’ folder that is structured along the game’s proper file path so that you can simply merge it with your current ‘IL-2 Sturmovik 1946’ game folder, and the mission files will be put in the proper place. This will not alter any of the files in your install- it will simply add the missions.

To play them, select ‘single missions’ from the menu, then select ‘USAAF’ as your air force, and under mission type select ‘Pappy at Asch 1944-45’. The mission list will come up. Have at it!

Un-installation

Follow this file path: Il-2 Sturmovik 1946/Missions/Single/US/Pappy at Asch 1944-45
Delete the ‘Pappy at Asch 1944-45’ folder.

Permissions

This mod is distributed as freeware. Nobody is permitted to use this content for the purposes of obtaining money or any other form of compensation. Anyone wishing to modify these files or use them as part of another freeware mod release is free to do so- credit where due is always appreciated!

A Note on History

While I’m as much a WWII history nut as the next guy, I don’t make game content that is designed to be 100% historically accurate down to the last detail- the efforts of others in that regard is truly phenomenal, and kudos to those who put in the time. These missions take place from late Dec 1944 to the end of Jan 1945, using the Battle of the Bulge as their historical framework. A couple of the units in play are historically accurate, while most are fictional. Only one of the missions has a true historical reference: the German fighter sweep known as Operation Bodenplatte. The rest are fictional but centered loosely around historical events such as the isolation of Bastogne and the recapture of St. Vith. My intent was not to teach a history lesson, but to generate some fun missions that offer a varied mix of air-to-air and air-to-ground gameplay, with enough storyline (through the mission briefs) to tie them together and give them a feeling of continuity.

A Note on Mission Briefings

These follow the same format from mission to mission. Among other things, my goal was to clearly explain where you, the player, falls within the pecking order. Some of the best custom missions others have made for this game leave me lost at the beginning, because I’m not sure what my position in the flight is, who the leader is, or which units are participating. When I take off, I’m not sure who to form up on. These briefs will delineate your assignment, and the navigation summary lists the mission waypoints with information to help those who like to play on the hardest levels, flying formation and navigating without game ‘cheats.’ You begin as a first lieutenant near the bottom of the pecking order, and quickly rise to a promotion to captain and command of your own 4-plane flight. On a few of the late-stage missions you’ll command 2 flights- half the squadron.

A Note on Weather

Winds are set to zero for all missions- I find that it makes aircraft movement on the ground very problematic.

The weather in the Ardennes during this period was notoriously bad- one of the reasons the Germans were able to push as far as they did. Many of these missions take place in poor to downright ugly weather. In a couple of them, the weather is meant to be more of a threat than the enemy. These will impact you more if you play on more realistic settings and like to come home and land after a mission. They are meant to be challenging and they are, depending on your skill level of course. If the weather is killing your enjoyment of the gameplay, alter it as needed- fun should be your primary motivator.

A Note on Custom Skins

I use them myself and highly recommend them, but unfortunately, I am not able to include them with this download. After doing a bit of research, it appears that I would need to obtain individual permissions from the original mod authors for files which were uploaded several years ago. I don’t have the time or inclination to try and do that, so what I will do is present a list of the custom skins I use for these missions, where to download them, and where to put them in your install if you elect to obtain them on your own. All the custom skins I used were downloaded from www.mission4today.com. In the list below, the file path is for the individual bitmap files for the skins- not for folders. Some of the skins in the downloads are arranged in folders; simply copy the bitmap files out of them and place them where I indicate below. Note that you are putting the same .bmp files in two different places: that has to do with the mission builds as well as giving stationary ground aircraft the proper look.

Hi
I'm confused about how to put the skin packs in to both these folders or is each one designated for one folder or the other...Never tried adding skins before
And what the difference between P-51NY and P-51NA
     IL2 Sturmovik 1946/PaintSchemes/Skins/P-51-5NT
     IL2 Sturmovik 1946/PaintSchemes/Skins/P-51-30NA
Thank you for any help it's appreciated

If I remember right a P-51NA is a B or C model,   if the skin is for a P-51D-5NT through P-51D-30NA  the skins are pretty much usable in all the D models.  The important thing to remember is B, C or D model of the 51.

  • "And you can fly, high as a kite if you want to..

Just put the planes skinfolders in the "skins" folder and you´ll be good to go. If you´re asked to overwrite click yes.

Nice missions, it would have really been cool to have the actual Jane's WWII Fighters skins into IL-2 for these missions. 8) I have the sample files but just haven't had the time to do them unfortunately...

I'm just saying, since you mentioned Jane's WWII Fighters and reminded me about it. ;)

Been years since I played the Janes game but it seems like the skins people have made for IL2 are far more varied and detailed than what was available for WWII Fighters. That was a fantastic game, though, especially for its time!
