In my mind, best way is to create a 3d object, but flat, like a ground plate.
Start from an existing object, adjust size, etc. and replace texture by your own.

Hi
I really knew.. As usual Uzin is the expert on this field.
And map of Poland 1939 very pretty and professional.
Of course I have seen the name of airfields in the ring on your map
Could you please tell us how to change on easy way the lettering in the ring ( in my case I would like to have PUCK)
Thank you Ivan for your help.
Expressions of respect for your skills.
Best Regards
Darek :)

1.Asume you have Poland 1939  map, if not installed, at least downloaded.
2.Open the folder .../STD/3do/airfield/LODZ/
3.Make a copy of this folder and rename it /PUCK/
4. Using Gimp, open there the file 4.tga
5. Replace the text inside the circle and save it.
6. Replace the text inside the file .../STD/com/addox/il2/objects/static.ini as needed in order to reflect the changes you made.
