P-40B / P-40C / Hawk-81A-2 - Corrected Instrument Panel
« on: May 30, 2016, 02:30:11 PM »

Hi all,

here is my attempt to correct some minor glitches on the instrument panel of the P-40B, P-40C and Hawk-81A-2.

Before :

After :

Just throw the files into your MODS folder. Tested under 4.12.2 Modact 5.3

The two original files were extracted from DBW so I don't know who should be credited. Tyrl did a similar cockpit so maybe it's his.

Thanks for any constructive comment.

Best regards

EDIT: Thanks to Epervier I've added a folder for the Hawk-81A-2

Hi,

once again a little correction

Before :

After :

This one just needed a hier editing. For a stock plane you can use the following file :

https://www.mediafire.com/file/6adt5ab137kuyqm/Corrected_Compass_P-40B%26C_Hawk.rar

Drop it into your MODS folder and you're good to go.

Otherwise, or for a modded plane, you can open the hier.him file, find these values :

[Z_Compass1]
Mesh Z_Compass1
Parent Body
Attaching 0 0.00754521 0.999972 0 0.999972 -0.00754521 -1 0 0 -0.39112 0.13672 0.13008

and change them to :

[Z_Compass1]
Mesh Z_Compass1
Parent Body
Attaching 0 0.258819 0.965926 0 0.965926 -0.258819 -1 0 0 -0.39162 0.121 0.13008

Depending on the cockpit repaint you use, you might want to adjust the penultimate value a tad (values between 0.119 and 0.121 should fit most of the cockpits)

Regards

I test asap in my 409 game.
Work fine in my 409/UP2.01:) :)
And... also your fixes work for the 3do\Cockpit\Hawk folder (Hawk-81A plane) !  ;)

Hi,

I recently discovered that my proposed correction of the gyrocompass was not only a fail but also that the file offered for download was faulty. I devised another one that should be better.

See Reply #1 for the details and renewed download link. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thank you very much ! ;)

[Edit]
I'm lucky I only had cockpits for P-40A/Hawk81 that were concerned!

The disk carrying the gyrocompass tape appears to have been tilted so as to seen pretty much edgewise by the pilot, even though he is looking downward. This results in the cylinder being seen as 'flat'. In reality, these cylindrical carriers were installed with their rotation axis parallel to the gauge's face. And so a look-down aspect will show the disk to appear as curved, like the stock aspect.

Moreover, the early versions of the Sperry gyrocompass had the window reveal no more that a 1 radian arc, or not much more than 50 degrees. In my mods I fix this by making the cylinder suitably larger than the too-small stock model. See my Wildcat cockpit mod to see what I mean, and compare to actual photos of '41/'42 era gyrocompasses in various plane panels. Another benefit of enlarging the cylinder is the reduction in the apparent curvature when looking from other than a face-on (or, more correctly, an edge-wise) aspect.

Hi,

Yes you're right. In fact that was a crude way to get the gauge more readable and mostly to get rid of the angular aspect of the "cylinder" (a octagon in the stock plane) when rotating. I've check your Wildcat and seen that this mesh is now rounder and the result is really good. I've tried this approach but I had a hell of a time trying to have a directional gyro showing the correct heading and renounced. For the time being I will leave it that way and wait for your P-40 cockpit upgrade. Thanks for your input.
