Which Dewoitine 520?
« on: June 12, 2015, 03:22:43 AM »

Hi Rebels!

I'm in the process to update some French campaigns of mine and, being eventually successful to have a working install of IES Dewoitine, I wonder what would be best choice between the two currently available. I briefly sketch my experience about with pros and cons:

1). Gorgeous inside and perhaps more proportioned outside, IES model has better default skin. Slightly worse (but more historical) performance, has the bad habit to be unrecoverable from an high-speed dive. A resource hog, required to free 256 MB of RAM on my low-end PC (reduced EXE) just not to crash, and still "stutters" in internal view. From my personal point of view, if extended in use to all campaigns of mine, would require complete redoing of skins, that, although with the help of excellent Arsenal's template, I wonder if I will be able to perform.

2). Definitely more manageable in all respects, Ranwers D.520 also allows individual numbering. Of course, this choice would mean "leave as is", since Ranwers Dewoitine is already in those campaigns (but would be a clue for other campaign-makers interested).

3). It would be possible to set both plane models in each campaign, leaving to player the choice of which he will fly. Obviously, being unavoidable the random presence of both in same mission (although not in same flight), would be quite odd to see at same time two different kind of the French fighter.

4) and 5). To avoid to take myself too seriously, I wanted to add in brackets to the two last options even a few humorous answers to my countrymen. ;D

Thanks for your attention,

I will not vote here with full seriosity, as a) I was a HistoMod tester until ca. 2012 and I like Freddy's/F_Red's models very much, so I am biased, but as for the RAM issue, to my experience for demanding mods, using Texture compression usually allows playability.

BTW I assume (know) with  UP2, you can also use an SAS exe (I can pm you my setup) and go up to 512 MB RAM loading which increases performance a tad. 512 MB and tex comp and all mods may load, yet 256 MB also works of course, even 128 MB worked for my HistoMod installs very nice. ;)
I hope you already use the SAS Selector exe, I use it for 4.09m as well. As well as carsmaster's light DIIs and the True Color Texture mod, so I can use all maps and skins.

Carry on..

Thanks for the tips!

Indeed, I'm already using texture compression. IES D.520 forced me to set the 512 MB RAM EXE, instead of previous 768 MB.

It looks won the parties of It's up to your choice/I don't care. Let's make some statistics:

Downloads (so far) of the sole "Bataille de France" campaign where the Dewoitine 520 appears (leaving apart the other ones also featuring the French fighter): 468

Views (so far) of this thread: 189

Votes: 9 (including mine!)

Also taking in account that many may be interested only in flying other available French fighters, or play British, or on German side, or perhaps don't know enough the two plane models to give an advice, there's an evident lack of will to give any contribute, even in form of an opinion.

Thanks anyway for your votes, and don't worry! I'm working on it, trying to please all! ;)

Campaign updated: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,39645.msg520642.html#msg520642

Eventually, I gave to player possibility to choose either of the two. It is even not mandatory to have IES Dewoitine installed to play campaign; just do not choose it from dropdown menu in this case (otherwise your campaign will crash)!
