Revert CUP effects?
« on: March 21, 2015, 12:52:11 AM »

Hi Guys, I downloaded the CUP mod earlier this week and I've been loving the new improvements.

I've found there to be a sharp FPS drop when running the CUP WAW mod versus running the stock vanilla game. On WAW I get maybe 15-20 frames on a stock DGen pacific campaign scramble mission. Running that same mission on stock I get maybe 30-40 frames.

Is there anyway to revert the effects of CUP to the original vanilla game? I experience the most lag when there's lots of smoke/explosions or the airfield and surrounding objects on screen. I've tried editing the config to reduce the Effects, Landscape, Water, sound channels and so on but I don't see much improvement.

My laptop is simply horrid but here are the specs.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M370 @ 2.4 Ghz
Installed Memory (RAM) = 4.00 GB (3.80 useable)
Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics
Sound: Conexant CZ20671 SmartAudio HD

Here's my conf file

Hi have the same problem of stutters in same conditions. It would be great to have jgsme options to revert to defaut effects and defaut sound. For the moment i play with hsfx only because of this drop of fps.
Please give us more options. Thanks

I also have the same problem with smoke effects in CUP.

Things are fine with the vanilla game.

But with CUP, smoke effects turn 60fps into a slide show (5-10fps). Most noticeable when looking at burning plumes of smoke on the ground (fps recovers immediately when they are not in view).

I found this could be mitigated slightly by setting "DynamicalLights=1", rather than 2, in conf.ini, but it's still a problem whenever there is more than one smoke column.

No doubt related to our PC's ability to handle the graphics. Mine isn't top end, but plays the rest of the game (and vanilla), fine so it feels to me like the smoke effects in CUP could do with some optimising if possible.

The effects in CUP mod almost look like they're from the Plutonium Effects pack. I had the idea to try and look in the contents of CUP and see if I could remove the effects bits but then I realized all the files in the CUP mod are SFS files and not easily tinkered with.

The same problem finding the takeoff runway busy with dozens of aircraft. Fps tremendous block of the game. My PC is high end and I can not handle this problem. I hope that the staff of modders find solution. Responders returned to use and HFSX Modact 5.3

Almost the same here. As far as I could investigate this for my scenario (I5-2430M 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM DDR3 1333, NVidia GT 540M 1GB GDDR3, SSD drive hosts the game, Win7 Professional 64) the most extreme drop in FPS occurs during explosions which gets worse with increased number of ground elements in focus. As soon as you leave this view things get back to smooth performance.

Last night I wanted to check some details for SBD3 ("Straight from the farm" campaign/single missions) and I noticed serious drop in FPS (14, 15) while sitting in the cockpit with my engine on only.

This is not the case with 4.12.2 + Modact 5.30 setup which I like a lot, btw, because it feels more "human" than any other combination I have tried (plain 4.12.2, HSFX 7.0.3).

Having in mind that 4.12.2 + Modact 5.30 is a basis for CUP (CFM previously) it's quite a pity to have such a drop in performance...

I'm not sure about the rest of it, but you definitely will see a HUGE improvement with even a modest separate graphics card. Not only will you get much better and faster graphics, but you will free up CPU cycles and memory for the rest of the game to use. Skip lunch for a month or two if you have to! GTX 750ti's are going for around $150 (dirt cheap for the power you get) and they run IL2 like gangbusters. You can get cards for even less that will help, but the 750 is the sweet spot right now. (I'm sure an ATI guy will chime in with the equivalent ATI card)

I agree...for the guy that doesn't have a separate graphics card, it must be hard to play at all without.

However, I think the problem still remains with the smoke effects in CUP being too intense in relation to the rest of the game. It would be nice to know what mod these effects are from and if/how they can be tuned down so that those with moderate (rather than high-end) GPU's can still play at decent frame rates.

Definitely true. An integrated graphics card is absolutely terrible for gaming. However this laptop is all I have right now at college. I have a powerful desktop computer at home but I don't have the option to use that right now.

As others have said, I just think the option to scale the particle effects should exist.

FX folders in your CUP folders (#JTW, #DOF, etc) will override the "untouchable" sfs effects. I've been copying folders/files from my finely tweaked Jetwar #SAS folder over to #JTW with good results, but it's a lot of work and will take some time and a lot of flight testing, Remember older effects packages have some incompatible class files, but the eff's etc are mostly all useable. I wish I could provide more specifics, but am so pressed for time right now with work and family. Classcheck, examine32 and folder ordering are very important.

For instance the beautiful afterburner effects for the F18 are completely gone in JTW, and I'm having no success in restoring them. And I also don't want to mess up compatibility, as we plan to do some online flying on HL here soon..

Too much troubleshooting really detracts from the limited time I have for flying enjoyment.

If FX folders in the WAW folder override the sfs effects, would it be as simple as copying the stock 4.12 effects to the WAW folder?
