Campaign mission CTD - any way of diagnosing?
« on: February 07, 2015, 04:25:13 AM »

Hello

I've recently been trying to play a number of campaigns that I've downloaded over the last 6 months and each time I think I'm making progress I come up against a mission that causes the game to CTD on me during the mission (quite often when the objective has been completed and I'm on my way home), I did have a long list of campaigns in progress (as many as 10 at one point) but now I'm down to about 4 scripted/modded and 1 stock DGEN campaign!!

Admittedly I have TFM 412 installed and most of the campaigns I've downloaded weren't written for that version, but I've also had this issue with campaigns that supposedly were made for TFM 412.

I've looked in the logfiles in the IL2 1946 directory but can't find anything that seems helpful.

Is there any (other) way of diagnosing what causes a CTD so that I can try to fix it?

TIA

No, there are no simply ways to diagnose that I know of. But thar the errors occurs some time into a mission could suggest a memory (leakage) problem.

A question: do you lose the progress done or even the whole saved campaign as an effect of this CTD?

No the only thing I lose is the progress within the mission.  Campaign progress seems to be OK and other Pilot Careers aren't affected, although I have in the past had a CTD wipe out all my Pilot Careers...

It's just rather frustrating flying for about 30 minutes then having a CTD, especially when you do well in a mission.

And the CTD is always at the END of a mission?

Nope.  Random points in the mission.  I've had it happen a short time into a mission, at the point where I'm almost home, and in between.

Odd. is the error repeatable or is it random?

Dunno.  To be honest I haven't tried repeating it.  I'll reinstall one of the campaigns I had the issue on and see if it happens again.

EDIT - tried one of the campaigns (the Coastal Command campaign) and where it CTD'd for me a little while after I got over the water it didn't this time (although my wingman blew up on the parking lot!!!).

This blowing up thingie suggest a clash of mods in your install, or a loud-out problem in the mission, but it probably has nothing to do with CTD problem  :-\\

Possibly a look into the logfile would help to fix this CTD.

No probably not because it's not just that campaign that CTD's on me.  It just happens to have been the one where it CTD'd the earliest (although not yesterday!!), most other CTD's are further into a mission thus it's frustrating and time consuming trying to replicate them.

The one that caused me to ask about this is the Legend of Y29, on the 2nd mission, where you escort the P47's to a target - I was on my way home following the P47's and other P51's and bang CTD!

@SAS~Gerax

Thanks yes I have the log file options set.  Next time I shall post a copy of it after a CTD but I looked yesterday and there was nothing significant, everything looked fine!?

EDIT - Hmm, I just tried the 2nd mission of Legend of Y29 again and apart from my Open Track screwing up (for some unexplained reason which cured itself next mission!?!) it all went fine, no CTD.  Seems I can't replicate the CTD's at will!?!

I'm going to guess and say that I might just have to live with the CTD's and start each mission that it happens on again, no matter how frustrating that is if I've got a few kills or survived a particularly hard engagement!

From my experience it is often (but not at all ALWAYS) that:

A.) Planes explode on the run-way at the start of the mission because there is a load-out error in one of the aircraft in the mission, e.g. one aircraft has been given a set of bombs it doesn't have. Requires that you find the culprit and reset the load-out. Start by setting all on default.

B.) Planes collapse on the runway at the start of the mission (with their undercarriage retracting) because in the mission there is an aircraft not actually present in your Mods installation.
