Best 262 Mission Ever (My Personal Best)
« on: January 31, 2014, 04:20:28 AM »

Hey fellas,
I just had to share today Two of the coolest things happened to me in IL2 today.   I set up as many B-17 as I could with P-47 x 4 escort.  The mission began at 4000m.  I had some 420s and some 109s on my side plus four 262 on my flight.  Soon my wingman and I were alone.  There were 2 combat boxes below.  By running at the boxes from an acute quarter angle I was able to avoid a lot of gunfire.  Mk108 is a scary gun to use.  Most kills look like a near collisions.  Over the frozen landscape the "Vans" began to fall.  A wing falling off here, a fuselage exploding there... Then I was alone with my wingman.  After a few minutes I had destroyed all 8 of them singlehandedly.  After I began to look for straggler's.  And it was here  where the next coolest thing happened.  I recently changed the command "start engine" with view full map on my joystick.  So guess what happened next?  You got it, both engines dead at about 3k.  On most IL2 planes this would not be a big deal but in the 262... If you fly it, then you know.  This situation had FIRE written all over it.  I swallowed hard and told myself to stay cool....
Ok, select engine one, Start....OK.  Run her up to about 30%...OK
Select engine 2. Start, OK, what did I set engine one to?....Oh crap.....
Engine two started but when I selected both engines and moved the throttle Num1 died.
Ok, we have no fire so still in business.
Ok Eng1 start.  Set to 40%... Ok engine settled about 5000rpm...
Start Eng2 Set to 40% wait for it to settle... Now select both and move throttle slowly...
WAHOo! we are back in the fight !

I found two straggler's.  Got the first one down then ran out of ammo on the second pass on number 2.  He was on fire though.  Through the clouds I found my airfield and landed in France without incident.  Ran her into the hanger and parked.  Both engines died.... out of fuel.
Here are the numbers.  360 Rounds of 30mm ammo used (all) for a whopping 23.61% of aerial hits.  This cost the USAAF 10 B-17s down.  It was my personal best.
I just had a great day!

Nice sortie, thanks for sharing the story with us.
I can easily imagine what happened to the 410s, but what about the other two 262s and the 109s? Hit by gunners? Or did the t-bolt escort have some fun with them?
By the way... how about the t-bolts? What happened to them?

Best regards - Mike

I was hoping no one asked that question.  I was also hoping that a man as intuitive as yourself would not read my little war story.  I saw the T-bolts in the distance...  I turned tail and looked for fairer targets.  I sure am no Jet Ace, Noooo Sir.

That was the right choice.  It is a much better use for the 262 to take down bombers than worry about the escorts.

Cheers,
