carrier deck officer...is this a good idea
« on: January 20, 2014, 11:45:43 PM »

Remembering all the way back to Combat Flight Simulator 2 when landing on a carrier was done with help of deck officer with his paddles telling you whether you were too high or low.
I was thinking that it would be nice if something like that could implemented in IL2.

we do have a deck officer that comes with the carrier crew mod, although he's just randomly waving the paddles about, lol, and not really doing the job he should :D

Such features are available in FSX making carrier ops in that sim quite a nice experience, especially with fast jets, angled decks and the modern light and mirror systems used. There was also a freeware gauge that put a small window with a batsman on the corner of the screen giving you correct instructions. Maybe a talented soul here can replicate this to Il-2.

When i come down on the deck of a carrier i haven't got time for all that hand waving with ping -pong bats i'm always in far to much of panic trying the get the canopy loose so i can climb out of the inevitable fire ball when my plane makes contact.  ;D

i'm with Blumax, lol - i shudder to think what i've cost my virtual navy in botched carrier landings... :D
i have learned many great flying techniques since first playing this sim, but i'm still a pretty crap carrier pilot.  :P

I will provide art content and American voice acting for a Landing Signal Officer if bentio is willing to do the coding. :)

I remember the CFS2 FSO.  FSO reaction time left a bit to be desired if I remember correctly (mainly due to CPU issues LOL).
I agree that Benito might be able to pull this off.  I'm not sure how the angle of approach etc could be communicated to the "LSO" though.
With a modern carrier scenario it might just be a matter of lining up certain lights similar to real life but the older scenarios (i.e. WWII) it might be a bit tougher.
Here's hoping however!!  :)

+1.

One comment:  this feature went back actually to Aces of the Pacific (Dynamix) ... perhaps even further.

How it was implemented in Aces of the Pacific (animated figure in window)

Cheers,
