War Time cover-ups of Axis battle victories
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:09:17 AM »

The extent of the US, UK & Soviet cover - up's ( press black-out) of Axis battle field victories during the war is astonishing.
Concealing these types of very significant battle field losses from the public would be impossible today.

Operation Goodwood is incredible - Tiger I & II's along with .88's destroyed near 300 allied tanks in 27 hours.

I've heard of Kasserine Pass and Gazala, but I never heard of Operation Goodwind or the Battle of Radzyimin. Why was I never told about this?

Operation Goodwood mostly known as battle for Caen, no coverup here. It is well known that the early battles after the allied invasion of France were very costly.
Batlle of Radzymin also known as battle at Vistula. The Germans may have won this battle, but they took very heavy losses, specifically with their SS Panzer divisions. Losses they could not afford and which enabled other successes for the Soviets (eg in battle for Berlin). So you may also call this a strategical defeat (as with Kursk battles). No coverups here either.

In wartime nobody will truly admit to his losses if an offensive does not go to plan, as this is bad for morale. And to recall earlier statements is no political tradition either.

There have been some coverups that extended until after the war though: eg I would call the cause of defeat in operation Market Garden a coverup..

Maybe there are more that have not seen the light of day yet..

when we buy books by historians or try to find forums of historians
we maybe will find the "thruth" or what ever this should be.
But this is very timeconsuming, we have to filter, compare, associate
and relativize all the infos there .. when I read one book, I need a lot
of other books and the net within reach to have all needed infos available..

the opposite is to watch for example "history channel" etc.,
thats nothing more than cheap mass products for nowadays TV and media.
Thats not "history", thats brain fast food. Crap.

Much more crap it is when this fast food "history" serves those who wants
to have some boom boom action or to have "their" history presented like:
"we did good", "we was right", " or "we lost, but we had the bravest soldiers,
the better planes, the better tanks" etc.. But this teaches nothing, it serves
affiliation feelings only. I assume 75% (or more?) of the infos you get on the net
and on other media are of this kind. Forget them.

miltary historians tells us other stories. Let us read them.  ;)
My favorite book is: Martin Middlebrook - The Nuremberg Raid.

So true Gerax..

Here are some more considerations:

"War is the continuation of politics by other means"  - Carl von Clausewitz
"In war, truth is the first casualty"  - Aeschylus
"War is a series of catastrophes that results in a victory" - Georges Clemenceau
"History is written by the victors"  - Napoleon Bonaparte (not sure with this quote)
