link to P-80N
« on: February 16, 2013, 08:47:32 PM »

I know it was a what if and it was a long time ago but can someone point me to where the P-80N was. if people don't know or remember there was a P-80 that was made by someone that had a tail hook for carrier landings, it was i think back in the 4.09 area and was the first jet plane in il2 to be made for carriers it was around the time the catapult mod was made.

There was indeed a 4.09 F-80Navy thread by Crazyflak in Oct2010,
this was deleted for reasons I do not know.
As crazy took his outtime from modding (maybe longer than we expect  :()
I can only help with uploading the mod.

Actually a P-80 with a tail hook was not a "what if" plane. There was a modified P-80A that they used to test for carrier use so the P-80N designation might be a "what if" but the aircraft type did exist and there were at least 6 takeoffs from a carrier.

In the shipboard trials aboard FDR on 1 November 1946, Marion Carl made four deck runs (starting from virtually the fantail) and two catapult launches at fairly light gross weights. All were satisfactory.

The aircraft carried Lockheed Aircraft Serial No. 1028/Navy Serial 29668; modifications include the addition of an arresting hook, catapult hooks and holdback. The photos were taken on December 5, 1945, likely at the Lockheed Air Terminal in Burbank, California. The Navy received its first P-80A at NAS Patuxent River on June 29, 1945. On November 11, 1946, this P-80A was used for catapult launches, free takeoffs and arrested landings aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Here is another one that you probably didn't know existed. I know I didn't until about four weeks ago. A navalized P-39 with a tail wheel instead of a nose wheel and a tail hook. :)

It was an experimental aircraft and only one was made but I thought it looked pretty neat.
