Convair XFY-1 "Pogo"
« on: November 03, 2012, 02:05:49 PM »

Firstly let me introduce myself and apologise for making my first post a request. I found your forum last week, and thanks to your modding have transformed Il-2 from dated but excellent game into a cutting edge flight sim again.
I'm new to modding Il-2 but not new to modding games in general. I've generated mods for a few of the total war games, mainly for personal use but one released on the TWC forums a few years. I've never produced any new 3d models for games, but I am an engineering student and I am competent with solidworks and maxsurf, so that's not entirely new to me either. I also have limited experience with the python code language.

My request is for the Convair XFY-1 pogo. For those who don't know it, it was an experimental US VTOL roject from the 1950's, along the lines of the Heinkel Lerche, for point defense:

As the aircraft is a turboprob, I think it'd fit in quite well with the original game - not so far advanced you can't have a decent gun dogfight in it.
The best bet I think would be to use the flight model from the Lerche (initially) with an existing cockpit, but a new model for the exterior. If you can use files generated by Maxsurf or solidworks (IGES is standard in engineering), i'd be happy to produce them, but animations and textures are beyond me. Maxsurf is a very good surface modeller, used for ships (i'm studying Naval Architecture currently) and would likely make a good job of the curves found on aircraft.
Let me know what you think, I don't have the experience to do this all by myself but i'd love to get involved,
-Matt

Pretty cool, actually. Along the line of these weird alien planes designed by nazis and built by americans is the Lockheed XFV-1 Salmon. It could land vertically or horizontally and had counter rotating props.

The Salmon is almost ready, and in its own slot, just a little of patience!!!!   ;)

2 things.

1. Will the Salmon have the same flying characteristics as the Heinkel?
2. This is in a Air Museum near my house:

May I ask if it will be able to take off from vertical and horizontal?

I think both AI behaviors are not possible, must choose

Excellent work - I was considering attempting the Salmon; it'd be nice to have the pair of them, for comparison.
I've started work on the fuselage today - only a rough mock-up so far, based on pictures. I'll order a 1/72nd scale kit in the next week or so to get the final shaoe and finer detail. I;m using blender - I take it it's possible to convert files generated in it to a format suiatble for il-2?
