I would be interested to see if there was a way to make static planes have selectable skins just like the normal planes.

teisco, I've moved this to tech help section. If you're unsure about where to post, use this basic rule that I follow. If your post has /is a question, and ends with a question mark, it's safe to assume that it's a help question.... ;)
Also, if you look around, you'll find the answers in the forum stickies.

Still trying to figure this out..there must be a way to do this that works. Where are the default skin files and where would I find the file that governs what skin is default?

give us some more info, mate....what mod version are you running/which mods are you using?
there is a mod available at vpmedia's site for changing the default skins, afaik it works for the static planes, as well. It's called SkinMod:

Mods/Skinmod/Planes/C-47/summer/ = no

Mods/Skinmod/3do/Plane/C-47(Multi1)/summer/

or Mods/Skinmod/3do/Plane/C-47(USA)/summer/

have you tried having a look in the Cache folder (minimise game after selecting and briefly flying with the skin you want to use), then copying those files to the relevant folder in the Skinmod folder? That's the way I usually do it...
Also, could you go through your planes and see if it's only some of them that don't work, and if so, which ones?

Using Skinmod is easier for all the planes included in the skinmods list.
But the point is to find the proper way to set up a new plane folder within Skinmod/plane folder, cause some use PLANE only ,others, got PLANE(Multi1) and others got; PLANE, PLANE(nationality),and PLANE(Multi1) folders and inside those some got up to 3 subfolders Desert, summer, and winter.
The trick with new planes (if they are set to be in the stationnary list), is to find out the right folders to create.
For example with the I-15 bis, a single folder I-15 with subfolder summer and it's ok
for Re 2000 I created a folder Re 2000(it) and it works
I did the same for SM 79 no joy, and I don't know why...
I guess there is an computer specialist logic under this, but for the basic user the only thing is to test....
Apart from this problem SKINMOD seems to be the best to manage the skins.
