A desert lion
« on: April 19, 2012, 07:15:11 PM »

October, 12 1980,

Major Bahram Ikani retreat in his damaged RF-4E after a recon mission over Baghdad. Even after taking anti-aircraft hits he managed to complete his mission. Notice the F-4 shadow trailing smoke heavily from the left wing.

The picture below shows his exit strategy to survive a pair of MiG-23 that were on his tail, flying lower than a snake belly  :)
Ikani almost went down due to fuel shortage but hopefully was rescued by a KC-707 that entered Iraqi air space to pull him back to base. The shortage of equipament able to gather military inteligence made both Ikani and the KC-707 act with great courage.

To those brave aviators here is my tribute:

I recommend the Osprey book about Iranian Phantoms. Full of histories like that one.
