Blackburn Skua / Roc -- Request for info
« on: December 02, 2011, 08:21:42 AM »

I've been collecting information on the Skua, it being the only aircraft carried by HMS Eagle during WWII which is not yet available. There is a Mushroom Model Publications profile which has good reviews but it seems to be hard to get hold of due to being out of print. The only drawings downloadable are not very detailed. Anyone got any hidden away?

The Roc was deemed not suitable and was never put into actions , they all became targettugs.

The Skua had the first Aerial kill in WWII Luftwaffe vs RAF in Norway near Trondheim , it was a HE-111 . The Skua got trouble finding its way and ditched in a river in sweeden. That plane is now in Sweedish Museum

There is a good account of early action involving the Skua and Roc on this site http://freespace.virgin.net/john.dell/index.htm

Its wrong to say the Roc was never put into action, but it is correct to say they were not a great success.

The Skua on the other hand had a distinguished, if short, record despite its shortcomings, probably most famous for sinking the first major warship by dive bombing --- Konigsberg in Norway.

do you know the ones from this set?

I also have a 3view from warpaint, but this one seems more complete (bigger resolution, more views and versions). As they are splited in chunks, you will have to tincker a bit in photoshop or similar, to get some views complete and resolve the jigsaw, but I think is easy enough.
I also have a good set on the Blackburn Rock if interested, plus a couple of profiles here and there. Just let me know if you want them.

I believe that the Mushroom book is available as "warez" on various file-sharing services, especially if you're willing to dive into the Russian language sites. One site that I've found helpful is:

Check out the cockpit/gunner station drawings on this site

I couldn't get a link to the diagrams, but they are worth checking out.
