Philippines map V2 by Delvpier
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:14:19 PM »

Looking more closely at this map I noticed there are a few airfields still missing.  I'm talking about the 1941-42 era when the P-40s flew from new strips on the Bataan Peninsula.
I've been reading "Fall of the Philippines" which is very good about detailing the campaign, although it's mostly about the ground battles because the USAAF was almost eliminated in the first days.

I wonder if a smaller map could be made with only the island of Luzon (for 1942).
...Would this be a desirable map?

IMO it would be a fairly easy map to make.  Delvpier's map is pretty good with locations, roads, etc. so it could be a good reference.  Would just need to get updated SRTM data for luzon... if anyone wants to help me get that.

I had thought about doing a JAVA map but now I'm more interested in Philippines.  I'm just more intrigued by the battles there and the "what if" scenarios ...if the USAAF and Army were reinforced and not left whithering on the vine by the US war department.

BTW, and I don't want to hijack the topic, where can I re-download the original Dlvpier Philippines Map? I have one but seems it is not functioning anymore in FMB, so maybe reinstalling it would do. The problem is that I can't find the download link anymore...

Thank you...

Col. King, I did a search on AllAircraftSimulations and found a link to V2.0 of the map:
http://www.gamefront.com/files/17824805/dlv_Philippines_v2.0.exe

Someone else PM'd me and offered their Luzon WIP map.
If Luzon has already been started then that's great news!
I'll have a look at it and most likely continue work on it.

Very interested in Luzon Map.. :)

And I was thinking... The Philippine's map is a huge one, and in not top-edge computers can cause some problems...  What about splitting it up in two? North Philippines and South Philippines?

I'm not a map maker, and I know how much work is needed to make a map.  But in this case the map already exists... Maybe splitting it in two parts will not be too much complicated?
It is feasible?

Cheers

~S~ Every One
Have read the post on the Philippines Map. I for one would like to see this
beauitful map be redone with the correct air fields and naval bases on it.
Also like to see it retecture with coconut, mango and banana trees instead of
original trees from IL-2, which makes the Philippines Map unrealistic.
Also missing Air and Naval bases at Cebu and Lapu-Lapu which is an important
base in the Visayas Islands. Plus there was no sea base in Dinagat Island.
I know for fact about this because I live in the Philippines and I am about an hour away
from Leyte Island. Also the little air base at Del Monte in which Gen. McArthur took off
from when order out from the Philippines. Here is a link that shows all the Air and Naval
Bases in the Philippines before and during WW2.
http://www.pacificwrecks.com/airfields/philippines/index.html
If any one would like to try and redo this map let me know and I will try and help as much as I can.
I am not a map maker, however this Philippines Map is an important map for the Pacific War.

CzechTexan!

Yes, that's a super idea. I once had an idea to do a P-40 campaign for this map, but abandoned it due to some airfields simply lacking.

Hope you have a go!

(PS. Love your Caucasus map!)

I agree with you. I have always felt the map was way to small and should have been made in sections, but I think it needs to be split up into at least three parts : A Northern part( Luzon Area ), Centeral part (Cebu, Negros  leyte and  all the island of Visayan Islands grouping) and Southern part (Mindanao). Each area was fought as a seperate campaign. In fact I guess one could argue for four parts as Leyte could be a seperate map. I fact four would be better. Leyte is not very big and in order to fit in many of the actual feature it will need to be made much larger as the actual distances are a bit small.  Even on Luzon the distances and compactness are very limiting. The distance from Manila to where both the Japanese and American made there major landing is only around 115 miles which is very compact. The same landing beachhead area at Lingayen  is around 20 miles wide and contained three airfields while around Mailia, an area 7 mile by 5 mile, had three major fields. Even the little island of Corregador had a landing strip. The Geographic compactness makes it impossible to actualy place many of these runways in a scaled down map any where near where they actually were and should be. On the now exsisting map one just has to leave them off or place them miles away from there actual location greatly distorying there size and shape.
