New Campaign: "To Lose a Battle"
« on: July 21, 2010, 04:27:28 AM »

Well, now my latest campaign is finished and ready to be downloaded: "TO LOSE A BATTLE".

It's a semi-historical, static 18-mission campaign, set during the Battle for France 1940. You are a French fighter pilot flying the Curtiss Hawk - a surprisingly potent aircraft, no cannon fodder for the Bf109.

You can download it here:http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads3&file=details&id=700

"To Lose a Battle"

The campaign commences with the Blitzkrieg phase, starting on May 10, with the actions against Belgium, swiftly followed by the breakthrough at Sedan, the dash for the Channel, and finally the air actions of the final weeks before the armistice on June 25. (At this date French aerial resistance had virtually ceased, with a number surviving aircraft withdrawing to French North Africa.)

Many missions in this campaign are based on actual events. Despite popular conception, the "Battle for France" was no pushover for the Luftwaffe. Fighter units equipped with first rate fighters like the Curtiss Hawk and the Dewoitine held their own, despite bad odds, and inflicted quite heavy losses on the Germans. And the pilots were often first rate. It was other factors that led to the defeat, to quote Philippe Ballarini:

"Without any doubts, the French Air Force could have been more efficient during the ground battles, but it was handicapped from day one of the war. Communications so crucial for the outcome of the battles did not measure up to the situation at hand. Radio communications were poor, with transmissions relying on the telephone service of the Army, and so poor in fact that some units of the Air Force had no communication with the ground forces for which they were supposed to provide reconnaissance and air support.

When we learn that the day after Dunkerque, more than 70% of the airplanes were grounded for technical problems, and that the same situation existed for the armors, we must agree with the comments made by historian Patrick Facon, that even before losing the air war, the French Air force had already lost the supply battle."

With this campaign comes 17 skins, made by the following guys: Imme, Macwan, Canon, Rudel, Owl, Buglord, Jbunelle, FBS, Claymore, Tchaika, Hayate and VP_media.

Also included is a bit of contemporary music (to enhance immersion a bit), and a new Background tga.

Thanks for looking!  :)

No, the aircraft is not included in the download, but if you use either the HSFX or Ultrapack mod, you have it there!

Congratulations on a great campaign Poltava. I am up to mission 6 and have enjoyed every minute so far. Lots of intense dogfights and interception missions. Makes a great prelude to the BoB campaigns available.
BTW, I assume the title of your campaign alludes to the excellent book by Alistair Horne - "To Lose a Battle: France 1940". A good read that I can recommend to anyone interested in the period.

Great campaign. However reached the final mission only to be greeted by the error message "Mission loading failed: Mesh 3do/Buildings/Pacific/Grass_Pen/dead.sim not created" Talk about campaignus interruptus!
Anybody have any ideas on how to solve this?
Using basically stock UP2.01.
Thanks.

Vegetarian!

This is very strange. It means that a stationary object is missing. But as I have built it using a vanilla UP/HSFX I wonder what can possibly have gone wrong. What version of Ultrapack do you use?
