new EPIC Games install 1946 Sturmovik no joystick found in Setup?

Long time ago user of IL 2 1946 but lost my game DVD so I installed this game from Epic Game on a new PC.  That went well, but after starting the game and using games Setup menu to set my Thrustmaster T Stick the game doesn't show it!  Win 11 device manager sees it on a USB port and I can test all the movements and buttons, but the game doesn't see it!  I'm at a dead end and can't "see" the problem.  Help is appreciated.

Make sure your joystick is connected and working before you launch il-2 and that you have joyUse=1 in your conf.ini
