Author Topic: Vanilla IL-2 4.12.2: Silent with directX, not launching at all with OpenGL  (Read 367 times)

Specs:
AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT GPU
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU
32GB RAM

Struggling with my vanilla 4.12.2 installation. Completely untouched config.ini with only the resolution changed, directX as its GLProvider. Launching the game and entering a flight works flawlessly, except that there's absolutely no sound at all, the game doesn't even show up in the Windows volume mixer. Looking at the config.ini again I can see that in the [sound] section SoundUse is set to 0, setting it to 1 does nothing and the game resets it to 0 again every time it runs. The sound.log shows the following:

I remember there was trouble with OpenGL and AMD cards last year, but I was pretty sure it's been resolved. Either it's this or my files are haunted, because I have no other explanation for any of this. First time I'm getting these issues.

Part of what you posted as sound.log would be supposed to be in log.lst.
Essentially anything past "Audio finished."
Is that really, really in sound.log? If so: That "vanilla" install is FUBAR.

As for the OpenGL crash, the access violation in "TF_IsCtfmonRunning" indicates a corrupted underlying Windows installation.
I know you will not want to hear this, but... if DISM (google!) doesn't help, the system is set for a reinstallation.

See, I can't even say because the log files all get written to very inconsistently. Some get updated with every launch, but sound.log would sometimes just be completely ignored with nothing written to it.

Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet eventually, maybe if more stuff starts breaking. I can live without IL-2 for now, dealing with windows and all the possible bullshit coming from that isn't worth it yet.

Still in my "denial" phase...

I've manually replaced both msctf.dll and opengl32.dll in my System32 folder (likely fucking up my device even further but fuck it, whatever), and now there's a curious little "workaround" I've noticed:

1. Launch the game in directX mode
2. Change the GL provider in-game to OpenGL
3. Watch the game restart and magically work all of a sudden (no graphical bugs, graphics settings allow me to bump them to their maximum)


Launching the game with OpenGL first still doesn't work (leaving the same hs_err_pid[numbers].log file), and this directX "workaround" still leaves the problem of no sound - and this time the sound.log file remains *completely* empty save for these lines:

I'll paste my conf.ini in here as well for good measure. Note that the GLProvider does change from directX to OpenGL when changing in-game, and that the game always sets SoundUse to 0 by itself when launching with directX, regardless of what I do. Setting it back to 1 changes nothing, the game always launches silently:

Another Update: I've figured out the directX audio issue, and I'm left even more confused than before.

If I launch the game and allow it to tab itself into focus, sitting through the entire loading screen, the audio breaks.
If I launch the game and alt-tab into another application, letting it load in the background instead (to around 60%), I can tab back in with the audio fixed no problem.

Launching the game in directX mode, tabbing out, letting it load to 60%, tabbing back in, changing the mode back to openGL seems to solve all the issues I had.

What kind of sorcery is this???
