launch IL-2selector.exe then change settings and check the option for dump mode. Launch BAT go to quick mission choose the plane you want to extract and fly a while. Close the game and in the main game folder you will find a dump folder go to dump/3do/plane and 3do/cockpit all that you need will be there

When I was working on the Vengeance on the weekend I had to copy the skins from the summer folder and paste them into the same location as the hier file to be able to see them in mesh viewer.

In a plane folder there is present a 'stand-in' skin_1o.tga file that's typically a tiny, single-colour texture. The game code gets the proper skin from outside the plane folder. To see the desired skin in the mesh viewer utility, you must replace the tiny texture there in the plane folder with a proper one. If raiding the Summer folder (it could be Winter or Desert, too), you pick the .tgb file only because it's the largest, typically 1024 pixels across. And remember that a .tgb is a .tga having a different extension; it requires to merely change that "b" to an "a".

To otherwise view a .tgb with any image viewer/editor, you could temporarily add ".tga", so that the fle name becomes skin_1o.tgb.tga. This will thus not conflict with the existing skin_1o.tga (usually 512 pixels.)

Many aircraft have a single LOD.
No problem for MV.
But alas, some aircraft have a 21-byte "skin1o.tga" file in the "summer", "desert" or "winter" folders.
And MV hates that.
So either you make a copy in "tga" of the current "tgb" file, or you convert the "tgb" into a 1MB "tga".

Another thing MV requires is a folder structure like :
3do/Cockpit/...
3do/Plane/...

Copy your convert skin1o.tgb to tga to plane\SeaFury_MX\ and overwrite.

Un saludo.

The folder looks like this with many more .msh files as you scroll down, is that the problem?

All this has come from using the dump function and flying the Sea Fury around for a bit, I havent changed anything else

Having all those mesh files present isn't an issue, that's how it's supposed to be.
The job of the hier file is to piece them all together.

You have to transfer the skins from the summer folder to the main folder now.

This all seems just as much hassle maybe more as viewing the skins in the QMB, a complete waste of time.

Honestly, Mesh Viewer doesn't really make a fuzz about what's bugging it when loading a 3D model.
If anything doesn't look as you would expect, I would recommend to take a closer look at the log found at the bottom of the Mesh Viewer Windows.
It's got a scrollbar to the right, so you can see all lines written there.
