Model Viewer
« on: January 28, 2024, 02:54:09 PM »

Hi all

long time lurker and IL-2 user but a new poster here on SAS  :-[

This may well be a long winded post for which I apologise but I used to fly in FS9, FSX and P3D and repainted aircraft for our formation flights using FSRepaint to view changes I made to paintschemes quickly (see attached) and Photoshop for the actual repainting

I'd like to start repainting in IL-2 and I'm wondering if theres a similar program to use thats user friendly for IL-2 to view paintscheme changes quickly rather than firing IL-2 1946 up all the time, I've searched the forum but I dont think my wording has been quite right to bring up anything that will no doubt be on the forums  ::(

I use IL-2 BAT fully updated mainly for painting and flying

Thanks for your time
Matt

I seriously recommend adding Sknil to your skinning toolkit, not for viewing models but painting directly onto them.
Great for finding or painting hard to get at places and invaluable for adding serials and roundels to aircraft that suffer from warping.
The Spitfire is a good example of this.

The problem with Sknil is that it has many bugs amd get stuck when encunteering problems in teh hier him or in some given mesh.
The advantages of Meshviewer is tht it shows you the problems encounteered in loading the model in its lower panel and this is very useful.

yes Sknil don't accept lines commented with "//" or consecutive empty lines so you really need to doctor your hier.him before opening

MeshViewer (or by is full name mesh dump64e) is very good for painting too.
But is nedded to do a little trick.
First navigate to folder of the plane what you need painting.
Go to summer folder.
Rename skin1o.tgb to -skin1o.tgb
and
skin1o.tga to -skin1o.tga
Now open in your paiting program any skin (in bmp) and save in SUMMER as skin1o.tga
Run MeshViewer and you will se the skin on plane. After every change on the skin you must reload MeshViewer.
After finish work save skin as BMP format and rename files in summer.
Thats all.

After every change on the skin you must reload MeshViewer
To be precise: Hit the "Reload" button in MeshViewer.
There's no need to reload MeshViewer itself actually.

Thank you for all these suggestions  :)

started to work with a few to see which is more comfortaable to me to use

Is there any tutorials written for any suggested?

Also trying to find the hier.him files or navigating to the folder of the plane I want to repaint....I've downloaded aircraft before and always seen the skin1o.tgb file and likewise in the summer folder but cant find the aircraft folders in my BAT install or MOD folders anywhere to be able to use the files  :-[

in BAT the planes are all in the sfs files so you need to use the dump function in the selector to extract them
