The inevitable DCS thread
« on: April 18, 2023, 11:46:22 PM »

Guys let's face it, there's so much to show from DCS!
If - like me - you love to jump the seat of those fancy jets every now and then, and would like to show what you've seen but don't know any good place to post it: Here's one.

Let me start with this brilliant video (which isn't my work):

Never played this new versions... had the original Lock On series and the DCS: Black Shark.  Took a look at the site and was very impressed.  Will have to try that at some point.  I checked https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/ and see they have a WW2 pack as well.  Has anyone tried that?

New Sinai map looks great too. Very happy with the new Normandy map, but poor AI and gameplay always brings me back here. At least for WW2

Modern jet AI in DCS can be a handful, they learned a lot new tactics lately.
As for the WW2 pack, didn't try that yet - WW2 in DCS to me is rather a cheap excuse at the moment, and after having spent way more than $1000 on IL-2 Great Battles I'm not ready to repeat that mistake yet.

There's a summer sale going on at DCS right now for a month - take care when reading the sale post, the basic rule is "anything not mentioned here is 50% off":

WW2 dogfighting is OK, closer to IL2 1946 than the laughable GB. Flight models of the Spitfire, 109, P51 and P47 feel great and of course the graphics are amazing. But getting flights to do what you want is near impossible. Just setting up some bombers to bomb a target is fraught with frustration.

There are some good paid campaigns for WW2, but many have realistic flight times etc so there can be a lot of flying and not much action (lauded for being realistic, but the simulation of boredom is a step too far for me)

The  default comms voices can pop up in WW2 missions and spoil immersion as they use modern phrases.

You can try any module or map for free for 2 weeks.

Yeah... Great Battles is expensive, but I still like it.  I guess I am with Storebror on this as well... after a while there is only so many expensive games and sims you can afford... 15 bucks here 20 pounds there... yeah...  then bam, your kids don't go to university...

You have totally missed what DCS is about

MI 8 is my favorite But I enjoy all choppers in this game
But after learning all the systems on Apache and then took on Hornets system  I hit a brick wall and lost all my motivation on DCS and took a long escape to msfs

I´ve seen the last F-15... and... the russian planes have to build better the wings, because when a missile hit them, only destroys the wings... strange...

Damage effects are somewhat lame in DCS.
Whenever you hit someone with missiles, 99% of time they lose both wings and you see flames coming from where the wing root was supposed to be.
However, there's not really a point in depicting 10.000 different ways of dying, isn't it?

It is routed back to when only jet and guided missile was a thing. You saw a dot in the screen and you fired and forgot. A black poof in the horizon and you got a kill.
Not mention for close encounters
