where do the graphics upgrades come from
« on: January 02, 2023, 12:06:05 AM »

i can find original game videos that is rather cartoony, and elightfully Red Baron 3d in quality.

I can find videos that use VP or BAT and have graphics somewhere between Rise of Flight and Cliffs of Dover Blitz.

I see mention of environmental mods. Do the BAT or VP mod contain the graphics upgrades or is that another crap pile to wade through

There are a few areas which bear on graphical fidelity.

Map terrain textures have come a long way, being now commonly based on real imagery such as from Google Earth.

New .dlls have boosted the capacity for large textures. The original limit was 1024 pixels, but now we can use 4096 pixel textures, for a 16X increase in detail. This applies to maps and objects.

A real game changer in certain respects is il2ge, or IL 2 Graphics Extender. It employs more sophisticated shaders which handle environmental lighting far more realistically.

A commonly used third party utility that offers many post processing  effects for the video output is Reshade, which is far less resource intensive than il2ge.

These are what immediately come to mind. In most cases you will have to do at least some installion yourself.

Basically it is a lot about basic graphic mapping file size and color depth.
Originally, 20 years ago, the game came with 512x512 8bit graphic files. Fancy for teh day, but quite crude and with lots of tiling when going closser. Today we are at 1024x1024 16bit as "standard" and 2048 and higher as "HD". That is a difference you see in color smoothness and texture detail on the ground and on aircraft. Of course, individual object modding with more detailed meshes and various effect modding went a long way as well.

To answer your question: Yes, BAT (and other modpacks) of course include such upgrades.
But for effects and other stuff there are wildly grown variants of mods which do similar improvements. Not all are compatible with one another, mind you. It's like a tree with many branches these days (or some say a jungle). But basically, with any more or less "up-to-date" modpack, you should be readily set up with a variety of improved graphics already.

Do the BAT or VP mod contain the graphics upgrades

As you see, there is no "the graphic upgrade", as in definitive. It is just "One kind of" these days. If you fly on some map in BAT or VP, they both may be very upgraded from the "stock" version, yet still look different in some details.

GE (Graphics Extender) is something else, it's kind of constant beta and requires some additional fiddling and reading up on.

so basically its   download BAT or VP, and then if im not happy with how it comes out.. spend a few weeks trying to find a more enhanced upgrade mod that MIGHT work with it?

Ive been watching 1946 videos that have the same graphical standard as Rise of Flight, cliffs of dover blitz, and even comparable with great battles circa december 2020
