Hi all,
I am not a new member; more: I am on old member with what I think a good know-how about installations, settings, mods, etc

BUT here I do have a problem; I was off for a few months ... now minutes ago I restarted my great friend (IL2-1946) and my controls do not work anymore ...
I found that the problem is in "settings.ini" file where the "joystickdeviceX" is now different for joystick and throttle and pedals (throttle was "joystickdevice0, now joystickdevice1 etc ...). So I think I can solve the problem but it will be very time consuming, so here I ask for your help.
Before the question, I tell you that I already had that same problems years ago and that is, IIRC that the joystick+throttle+pedals are usb-sensible, i.e. if I change the usb for the controllers I have to remake all the controls settings, is that correct ?
But  i did NOT changed the usb for the controllers; I did remove them for these months, but now I re-put them in the same usb they had in the past

So the question is: if I do not have a "profile" software for my controllers (Joystick T16000, pedals Saitek and throttle X52), is there a way to make the IL2 settings file "indipendent" from the usbs ??

Hello blackshark,

maybe I don't understand you correctly.

If you plug a USB device from one port to the other, nothing changes in the settings.

Press "Win + i" key, then "Devices" and you can see all connected (and also remote devices) btw.see occupied ports.

As long as you have not overwritten or deleted any "Settings" they are not lost.

Well maybe my question was not clear; in IL2-1946 Controls screen you set each device axys for each command, and each device is defined with a unique "ID" in the Controls screen.
In my setup the rudder is ID3, throttle is ID2 and joystick is "without-ID"
so for example in the Controls screen I have:
Rudder    Z-Axys Rotation
Power     -Z-Axys ID3
Aileron    ID2 X-Axys

My problem is that if I do not use IL2 for maybe a couple of months (even if I do not changes the usb where each device is connected), my IL-2-1946 does not recognize my devices any more; to be clear I still have all the commands that I defined in the Controls screen, but for my IL2 the ID of each device is changed so the commands do not work anymore;
for example when I restarted IL2 yesterday, ID2 now is the joystick (that before was ID3), ID3 is the throttle (that before was ID2);
so to have my commands working again, I have to change them manually in the Controls screen one by one from scratch (argh !!) ... or better, I do that modifying the settings.ini file with notepad using "replace_all"; for example "replace_all" JoystickDevice1 (that is ID2) with JoystickDevice2 (that is ID3) etc ... and then all the commands work fine

but it is very frustanting to have to do that often, imagine if you have maybe 3 or 4 installations as I do (BAT, DBW, ...) ...

so my question is if there is a way to solve that; I mean have the ID for each device "indipendent" so that IL2 always use the same ID for the same device (in other words to have for example always ID2 for throttle, ID3 for rudder etc ...)

I knew that I had something to do with you before, but I didn't know what or why.

Yes, of course, my #DBW, the USB hard drive, now I remember!

Your entries for the assignment of your pedals and the stick which you define in the IL-2 are entered in the "conf.ini".

I have no idea why the "conf.ini" is overwritten with you.

• Make sure that your "conf.ini" is not write-protected.

• Make your desired settings in the IL-2 game.

• Start the game to check if everything is ok.

• Go to the main games folder and right click on the "conf.ini", properties and check the box... read only.

• Just in case, copy this read-only "conf.ini", paste it on the desktop and rename it "-conf.ini".

   Then throw this "-conf.ini" back into the main game folder. So you always have a backup just in case...!


I am sending you my "conf.ini" with the pedals entries. Better not to use them, just look, please.

I do not understand what to do here in conf.ini to solve my problem ...



My conf.ini is "read-only" since 2018 at least, so it did not change since then, and it always worked in the past years; never had this problem before ...

But today again! I started my IL2 and again I had the same problem: controls not working because device ID changed !
and the only solution to my problems is the one I wrote before ... to change one more time the devices reference/ID in settings.ini file for throttle, joystick and pedals ...
really really frustrating ...

is that not possible (see the pics):



Controls\Input Devices... click "Joystick2" and safe.



Make sure that write protection is deactivated in your "conf.ini".

By the way, I've never had the problem you describe here with IL-2 in more than twenty years.

Your problem is a mystery to me.
