scary ban incident
« on: May 16, 2022, 12:22:23 PM »

I dunno what happened but I had a VPN I was trying out to protect my pc. Anyway I logged into SAS this morning and got hit with this "Sorry Witchy, you are banned from using this forum!
HMA
This ban is not set to expire."

I was speechless, so I deleted the VPN program I had and cleared cookies. Must of been some error. Looks like I was not banned. Maybe the website thought I was a bot?

I don't think the Admins like VPNs. Too easy to hide potentially nefarious activity, I think.

There are reasons to use a VPN and there are reasons to block it.
For instance, if you are living in russia or north korea and want to have access to news from other sources than your own country's state media, you have no other choice but to use a VPN.
On the other hand, if you are operating a website like ours, which isn't geo-blocked anywhere within the known universe, there'd be no other reason for a user to use a VPN service other than to disguise his true identity, i.e. being a known "bad apple" - hence we block it.

Yes of cause.
It's not like we'd block each and every VPN that exists - and from a professional point of view, let me add that this would be futile anyway.
We just block the baseline, covering 99% of scumbags running around on the internet.
