In the wake of the loss of the USS Newark (ZRCV-7) to a kamikaze, an eighth and final ZRCV would be laid down: USS Los Angeles (ZRCV-8). Commissioned in late July of 1945, it would not be equipped and deployed in time to see service in the last days of the war in the Pacific.

However, it would take part in some flight trials with another craft that came to late to see service, the F8F-1 Bearcat. Testing was undertaken to see whether or not the aircraft would exhibit stable enough flight characteristics to be able to successfully engage with hook-on operations. While these proved reasonably successful, they occurred too late to be trialed in active service

"Oh, the year was 1938..."

"When Giants Ruled the Skies" ended stating the the ZRS USS Akron was decommissioned with the introduction of USS Long Island in 1938, but never explicitly stated what happened to it. I propose an alternate option to the notion of it being scrapped.

Very much WIP, but coming within the near future

Don't bite off more than you can chew...

There's things down here the Devil himself wouldn't do...

Just remember when you let it all go...

What happens down in Mexico...

Stays in Mexico

Just finished Vampire_pilot's excellent "Jennies over Mexico" campaign. A rare telling of the very infancy of American air power, providing a unique look at the first clumsy steps of the force that would eventually be capable of projecting power to opposite sides of the globe. With so much focused on the flashier bits of the history of the US Air Force, it's an interesting change to see a campaign looking at this oft-forgotten chapter of that history. Highly recommended!
