a Map of Syldavia-Borduria (fictional) ...
« on: February 15, 2022, 08:16:41 AM »

Blistering barnacles! Here is a download link for a map set in the Tintin universe. It is for the fictional countries of Syldavia and Borduria, two implacable enemies, as conceived by Herge in the 1930's.
There of course not being any such countries, I took a bit of real estate from elsewhere and applied what I hope to be appropriate looking textures to create somewhat backwards and rural looking countries. There are lots of castles and old fortifications as befits any self-respecting Balkan country.

I used a few names from the Tintin albums for names of the towns and cities, but most are names using Brussels dialect spelled in a sort of Balkan style which I made up by necessity, much like Herge did in his albums. They all mean something, usually comical, but that is of little importance when flying and dogfighting. If you can't make heads nor tails of the names, you can easily edit the file texts.txt with any word editor and turn it into another fictional/non-specific forested looking region. I also included layered .psd files which are easy for editing the map, in this case the ed-m01 maps if you wish to use the map for something else than the fictional Syldavia-Borduria countries. Naturally you don't need them for flying and you can readily delete them should you be hard up for space. But layered files are so easy when editing a map.

There is also a summer and autumn version, just for variety. Both include BumpH files. The 3 bluish stars near the bottom of the map indicate the location of mining facilities. And I'll reiterate my recommendation of flying with hazy weather or worse.

Hi agracier, I love this map! I would like to ask you something - I wonder if you would please consider producing a version of this with African buildings? The textures, especially the autumn ones, are absolutely perfect for Africa. There have been so many COIN operations (several still going on) across terrain like this, so that a version with regionally appropriate structures would be brilliant.

Thanks again for all your work.

Yours,

Clive

The territory, the satellite imagery to make the map is from part of Eritrea, so an actual African country. I was/am planning on making an arid version of this terrain/map. I have a basic version but it needs lots of work.

On another map (not released yet) I am seeing if it can go the other way: from an arid landscape with African buildings and converting it into a green landscape. I also have a basic version, but I personally thought the white/beige African/Egyptian buildings looked a bit on on a green landscape.

But I can always try. The hardest part in making a map is putting together a harmonious palette of texture colors that blend well into each other. I suppose I could try using African/Egypt buildings on the autumn map and making a separate version.

I must admit that I too find the white buildings glaring. I wonder whether the Asian thatched huts/houses would look better? Certainly not out of place for large sections of Africa IRL.

My impression is that the thatched huts are too small to be seen while flying aircraft. Especially against a predominantly green background. I placed a not inconsiderable number of true African huts on a Congo map and they seem inconsequential and way too small to add any visual improvement on a map. That's why I made the towns on the Congo map out of Egyptian houses, so they would at least show up from in the air.

If you have any other suggestions for buildings/objects to use, I am all ears.

I know what you mean re building size. Not too bad for me, as I fly a lot of COIN missions which tend to be low and slow. I did create a generic 'native' village which I use on the Green Hell map for COIN operations, which I think doesn't look too bad. That map has a lot of clearings, so I just drop the village in there (usually adding some camp fire smoke). You do need to be flying low, though.
