Atoka's little plastic machines
« on: December 04, 2021, 07:57:53 PM »

Hi

Besides aircraft, ships are also a piece of my heart, especially the early 20th century era liners and freighters
I find them easier to build especially cause of the painting (well for simple ones lol)

My first try in modeling was a triple ship build

Warning! Shit quality pics ahead. I only have a potato for any photos ;D
Oh and mind the background. I have literally no place in our tiny flat to take good photos

Revell Type VIIC Uboot 1/350
My very first model ever, just to get a hold of it as it can be seen on the quality. The choice of color was rather bad as well. Originally I wanted to paint her belly black but stuck to a dark gray that lightened up as it dried ::)

Next up was a Liberty ship
Trumpeter Jeremiah O'Brien 1/700
It was easier as it was red under the waterline and gray for every other part. I only painted the top of the funnel, the prop, the inside of lifeboats and the rudder (with a bad shade of red but nah)
This made her a common generic wartime livery that I actually wanted so I left it as it was and I think it looks rather good

140 parts for such a tiny ship, but I did it :D

Then my pride and joy, My first ever fully built and painted model of one of my favorite ships:
Revell RMS Titanic 1/1200
I went so far, I painted the top of railings brown, the machinery for the anchors and docking bollards black with the top of the pulleys gold

I particularly like the color of the funnels
While everyone uses an incorrect yellow or orange for them, White Star Line used a shade of buff for their funnels so I went to look for some buff color and I think it turned out great

I have a half done An-2 in the shelf but somehow I don't have the motivation to finish her currently...
I want to replicate the plane of my childhood

I'd love to build some more ships, especially some classic liners and some bombers but I'm currently shoved into a 2x4m room with also no money for any hobbies so maybe in the future sometime

Fun story:

As I ordered the liberty ship, I went to a local store to look for some paints, glue and stuff and looking around, I found some good little models

Being a fan of Silent Hunter 5 I just couldn't leave the Uboat on the shelf so I was like, yeah, okay, you come with me
But after raising it off the shelf, I noticed what lurked under it and with my eyes bulged I screamed in my soul: THAITHANIIIIIIIIC
And the rest is history ;D

Now I'd really like to build a He-111 but painting aircraft is a rather challenging task, especially with camouflage

Subsims are a blast and a good break from flying if you want to play something a that's more slowly paced.

As the heretic I am, I don't like the earlier Silent Hunters, only the 5th
With a ton of mods it surely can be the best of it's genre
Also having a kind of sinking ship fetish, it satisfies me well lol
I designed some good sinking sounds for it, and just cant help me watching ships go down in the foams groaning as their imminent death takes over all of them.
I even count how long they sink
My record holder is a Vicotry ship with a full hour and 10 minutes sinking time with a Liberty ship coming 2nd very close with 1 hour and 8 minutes ;D

Also it's very rewarding if you know what you are doing and mercilessly unforgiving if you make the tiniest mistake. Truly one of a kind (as the sub warfare was)

Nice little collection there.  8)

Here's hoping you get room to expand your fleet soon.  :)

Thank you Andy, you commented just as I did on your post lol

And thanks for that heads up. Maybe somewhere in the future when I can finally move out after finished studying and finally work in my specialty (plumber)

Ship on the horizon

With my birthday around the corner, I ordered 2 more ship kits

One is Revell's Colombo Express
I always had kind of a hidden admiration for container ships and when I learnt about it I was really thinking if i should get one considering the fairly high price here. But I did anyways. It'll probably arrive this week
It's also 1:700 scale so it'll look good next to my tiny 1:700 scale liberty ship ;D

The other one is my always admired and favored renowned Titanic
I ordered the Revell 1:570 kit as I always wanted a bigger model of the Titanic

I also have an old hobby boss kit that my dad started assembling and painting pretty terribly besides I told him that I'll do it (many years ago)
So I lost my will to complete it
Now I'm thinking of building the Britannic out of it. That would need additional parts but I'll find out how to do them over time probably

Updates soon 8)

Liking the look of that container ship - I'm sure you'll do a good job on it.  8)

The container ship arrived early afternoon today

Hull assembled, deck test fitted

Then moving onto the most delicate part (for me), painting

I paint with brushes and the waterline came out rather good
Although I made a mistake and deviated a bit on the bow as seen on the bottom pic but other than that, it's nice
The mould also had a very handy barely visible waterline mark so I could mask it down along that. Though as i said it's barely visible so that's how i made that tiny mistake
I already applied masking tape again and painted that little part

Now I'll wait a day or two for it to dry so i can mask the bottom half and I'll paint the hull, meanwhile I'll probably assemble the deck with the separating walls and paint it as I can use the same color I used for the bottom

My little Queen aka my girlfriend christened her Bremen Express as it has optional decals for 6 out of the 8 ships of the class

Meanwhile the 'anti fouling' paint dries fully, I assembled the deck and started building the container blocks

My table is starting to look like an eastern european housing estate ;D

I originally didn't want to glue the blocks on so I can display the ship either loaded and unloaded whenever I like but they are so unstable, that I may have to...

Status report

Container blocks assembled

Deck painted but left the containers' space untouched for cement to stick and work easily when adding the blocks

Added lifeboat with slide, prop, rudder

Turnable

Bow thruster colored

Painting the hull

Again a delicate part where I'm nervous about the waterline and brush marks ;D
After this I'll have to do it on the starboard side too so it's quite a bit of work for now
Meanwhile I'll paint some containers randomly while it's curing everytime I use a color
When the hull is finally done, the only thing left are gonna be the superstructure and painting the containers, and of course the decals (another part I'm afraid of)

Meanwhile the Titanic order was cancelled cause of 'stock shortage'
Then why in the hell did they say they have it in stock?

Now I ordered a Revell 1:700 scale Titanic, same scale as this thing and the liberty ship so it will be a fine little collection showing the sheer size differences ;D
If I knew sooner, I would have ordered this one and the titanic together so SHIPPING (pun inteded) wouldn't have costed twice as much (i ordered the titanic from the same site)
But the funny thing is they sent me an email like 2 days after the order on how satisfied am i with the webshop. Now after notifying me of the order being cancelled, they sent another. Sure I can saw now, Not at all heheh
