Spanish Civil War Map: Ebro Delta
« on: December 03, 2021, 07:03:26 AM »

Here is a link to a new Spanish Civil War map of the Ebro Delta.

I've had the map almost finished for a few years but never got around to doing the last steps and checking things out. Anyway, I'd say it is more or less finished now and ready for use. My main objective was to try and create a map with textures giving a more or less good feeling of a Spanish landscape. I'm still not really happy with the actual Ebro Delta area textures. I've tried to make a sort of marsh texture but haven't really got there. So, if ever anything is done for marsh textures, that part may be redone later.

I also placed transparent 3-D trees on one texture, the RGB 20 slot as a sort of stopgap measure to conjure up an extra texture slot (there are never enough). You won't see any trees but you might just try to land on them in an emergency and crash. The RGB 20 wood slot was not used on flat land, so there is that.

Towns and villages are more or less correctly positioned.

Airfields are a different matter and I've added a number spread out over the map more or less evenly, but not historically.

I made the map with an old DBW map making version and was able to use it in BAT without any new objects needed.

My big thanks for this map and all the others.

It's about the only thing I can contribute in return for the incredible variety and wealth of planes that is available thanks to talented modders ...

Just checked it over quickly. A few things that caught my eye:

The coast near the SW corner exhibited chopped out parts, in a very orthogonal pattern, putting some towns well out in the water. I used your mymap_C.tga to create another map_c.tga, and could see the differences in the output. The replacement cleared up this issue.

The bridge at Amposta (just before the river delta begins to fan out) stops well short of the west bank. I think the presence of buildings to its west impinge upon the bridge generator, causing it to be made short, meaning some buildings would have to be cleared out in order that the bridge be able to extend to its proper length.

I see a number of villages floating in the sheltered bay SW of the delta.

There are sections of rivers where the topography is sloping noticeably, making the river undulate over short distances. Some localized 'flattening' here would be good.

I think a more densely forested texture would be good for the hilly terrain, as shown on your Ed map imagery.

If you want, I can supply the fixed map_c.tga....

Sure, always welcome.

I will see about the other issues you mentioned. I suspect the floating villages were overlooked as part of temporary placements while working to put together villages. Anyway I'll see.

The only thing about the woods is that RGB24 slot is already taken because I had no other available slots left. I've experimented with using different textures for each wood slot (RGB 25, 26 & 27) but they all generate the same texture on a map. I wonder if anyone knows what those 3 textures do or are supposed to do.

Here's the map_c.tga and the accompanying table created from mymap_c.tga already present in the map folder. It fixes a strange, blocky chopping away of some coast near the SW corner of the map, leaving some towns floating out in the Med.  ;)

I note that the original, faulty map_c.tga had a number of additional rivers, appearing to be more minor based on their narrowness. I don't know if these additional rivers were intended in the final product; they weren't present on mymap_c.tga...

If this checks out OK, might it be best to incorporate it into the archive, whereupon I would delete the link here?

Let me incorporate it into the map and then I will address the other issues you brought up, like the floating objects.

When done I'll make a new download and delete the old one.

tnx for the help.

Not yet having gone so far into map modding as to remove (or add)  a bridge, I dunno.  How did it get plunked down onto place to begin with?

By accident I think. I never use game created bridges as they are more trouble than they are worth.

I think I'll leave it be for the moment and we can pretend it is partly damaged by a Nationalist air raid ...   ;)

Here is an updated link. It has been added to the first post as well:

Nice, will this map work with these missions?
