BAT: SYSTEM SPECS, BEST SETTINGS, FPS
« on: November 29, 2021, 04:02:52 AM »

Good day everyone.
I´m posting here not being sure of the right place.

I´m having some issues with BAT when playing missions with large bombers formations with huge FPS drops. I´m aware of the 32 bit engine limitations, but still dropping to 8 FPS sometimes seems too much. Also, using Il2 Graphics Extender sometimes i see a plane making odd trajectories while watching replays from the game, i wounder if there´s any fix patches related with it, and if so, where.

Regarding performance, here my system specs:

AMD Ryzen 3 1200 3.1 ghz (3.4 turbo mode)

Ram 16 GB 2666 mhz

Amd Radeon RX 580 4 GB DDR5

Many thanks

how large is a "large bomber formation" in your case? 10, 20, 50, 100?

Yes, massed bombers are and always were an FPS challenge, particularly combined with fancy effects and something like graphics extender that demands god knows what from that single core you are running on.

You can't "patch" this away, you need to find your own best settings

Aside from a decent processor and graphics card, I found that having a monitor with a high refresh rate is quite an important factor in determining frame rates per second.

I too used to have 8 frs even with just a few aircraft, but then my monitor was only at 60 hrz refresh. By chance I ran the same game on a 70 hrz monitor and saw a rise in frs, so I afterwards bought a 170 hrz monitor and my frame rates never drop below 40 or 50 and are usually up in the 120s and more.

Monitors with a high refresh rate seem to be an overlooked part of the necessary hardware ...

Are you vaguely interested in answering my question?

if you have a .mis file, you could also share that for a comparison.
To at least see if the mission is very demandingly built or not.

Well, well, well.
This is a benchmark mission for any system, if I ever saw one.

80 x B-17  (in words: eighty)
28 x covering fighters
vs
16 attacking fighters

That is 124 aircraft in a tight ass furball, shooting from all barrels.

I have a brand new system with good card and processor. I can run this mission "playable" but not great, could maybe squeeze performance a bit if i tuned down my post processing, but not by much, as the sheer amount of planes makes the processor the bottle neck.
(and if you have a real slow HDD, you can go fetch a cup of coffee while the bombers spawn a couple minutes into the mission maybe...)
AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (3.70 GHz)
Radeon RX6700XT 12GB

That said, I manage to run 24 - 18 FPS when fighting in the actual bomber stream, depending on where I look and zoom.
Playable, but If I had made this mission, I'd have tuned down the amount of planes, particularly the big ones. That, and only that is the key here.
On approach, I have a solid 55+ FPS

If anyone wants to test their system to the max, this is a mission to do that :)

See, and this is why I asked the question you never answered: How many planes?
I'd have told you this in my second reply if I'd have known the number.
But then, now you know how to post attachments :)

That was impressively instructive...especially the "attachments posting" learning curve.
Thank you Vampire.

Agree. I'm looking forward to an upgrade as asap. Refresh rate seems more important than the highest resolution quality we usually seek.
But a 175 hrs might be expensive for me by now. In Europe this hardware is a lot costlier than in the States as i could clearly see checking Amazon's website.
The greater the offer is, the lower is the price 😊

Thanks for that tip. Never considered that before.
