New Map of Congo

Map of the Congo River Basin

Here is a new map of part of the Congo River Basin. I've had this laying around in a one texture version for some time, but I ended up finding a good set of textures that gave the impression I was trying to create of a dense tropical forest with innumerable rivers of all sizes.

As a theater of war not much happened in either of the world wars. So if used for flying it will be in an alternate version of reality or just for fun.

Rivers are navigable for quite a long distance which gives scope for use of ships. I have no info on actual airfields, so I put 3 airfields on the map, one in each principle town: Cabinda, Boma and Matadi. Other towns/villages marked on the map with a star are mainly random and don't correspond with actual places. I used Mid East buildings mainly because of the color contrast. There is otherwise so much greenery on the map, that a few white buildings make for a nice contrast.

I made the map in my DBW version of map-maker. It flies in my newest install of BAT without having added any new objects. So it should be good to fly there.

This map contains 2 versions, one for a 1940 version and one for 1960 with two concrete airfields ...

I hope it works well. I'm a bit rusty after a hiatus in map making, so let me know if there are any tech errors ...

A small tip: best to fly with hazy weather or worse and either in the early hours or the late hours of the day to get a good oppressive tropical feeling. And a tropical thunderstorm is something of a flying experience as well.

Installed in bat 4.2 via readme. So I try to make a wquickmission and go to fmb and insert onject check on player as the plane and two waypoints via inmsert object and save to the folder Congo in quickmission and quick. I click on fly and nothignhappens. Just takes me to qmb and no congo in the listing. Am I doing something wrong or is missing obkects. The map loads for sure.

I haven't made or flown quickmissions in years.

Try in full map mode and just stick one plane in as player and see what happens.

I didn't add any new objects to the map and all textures are self-contained in the texture folder.

Let's see if any others have the same prob. I doubt it could be missing objects because I haven't added any new objects to my new BAT install.

Perhaps if others can use the map they'd be so kind as to leave a post ...

G'day Guys

Planning on adding map when I get home from work.
Let you know how I go.

I suggest opening map in FMB, add your aircraft then click save.
Give name like Congo map test and save in demo missions folder.
Click play and if the map can save it will take you to briefing screen and click fly.

Edit: If you want to create QMB missions you have do multiple missions for red and blue not just one.

Like I said above I'll test this myself later.

Another unusual area of the world for Il-2

I can smell jungle adventures when snow starts to fall outside.

Not necessary to press Fly after saving. Just try to save it a second time under the same name : if it has been saved the first time, it will ask if you want to save the new datas (even if unchanged) !!! Goes quicker that way !

G'day Gaston

Generally when I add a map to my install I'm eagerly anticipating getting into the air and checking it out, I agree your way of checking if a map saves is much quicker.
Thanks for the tip.

As far as the map goes no problems whatsoever, jungle adventures indeed.
Just need some Indiana Jones like temples and ruins brought into the game.

So hopefully dsawan's problem is addressed with the QMB mission tutorial.

Thanks agracier for your work, I did try chasing up the Africa/Congo map for you at other sites with no luck, it's not even in the 300 included maps in VP Modpack.

There is a nice inland Congo map included in BAT. It's that map that sort of got me to (finally) try and get the right texture set for this map. Finding textures that give a good visual impression of what we think an area looks like is not the hardest part of doing a map, but it does take long trying out texture after texture and combination after combination. Making a one-texture flyable map is something of a breeze, but then 'painting' it is something else ...

Anyway, glad to hear it works.
