Navalized ME 262
« on: July 25, 2021, 03:00:44 AM »

I always wondered if the 262 was made into a naval fighter and attack bomber. That would have to assume the Graf Zeppelin was made operational. The precursor to the allies developing carrier based jet aircraft. Since we have the 262 in its many variants and radar, some modifications could be done to give it a arrestor hook and shackles for torpedo. Some naval skins for it. too. Just a thought and request.

Hi dsawan

Would a ME 262 be able to takeoff on a carrier?
Didn't they need a long runway?
German aircraft is not my strong suit so just curious.

True, but makes a good what-if. or with jettisonable pods on either wing to assist with take-off due to shorter runway on a carrier.

As BK said! A naval 262 is as feasible as a naval B-29! Its engines are prone to compressor stall when wrongly handled and they don't take sudden power changes very well, a Horror in the carrier landing pattern. Couple this with a ridiculously short range and you see why the 262 would have been a really bad naval fighter...

As far as navalized jets go, yeah, I can't see the Me-262 as one. A more believable "what-if" might be a brand-new carrier-based jet loosely based on the Me-262, but with the more substantial alterations needed for an aircraft of this nature.

If you really get into what-ifs, I find that it's one of the best and most entertaining ways to learn real history. The most believable what-ifs take quite a bit of in-depth research into what actually happened. I've fallen into the "rule of cool" trap myself on several occasions, and while it can be great for setting up some action movie or comic book themes, you inevitably sacrifice a lot of realism.
