TRIGGERS DO NOT WORK ANYMORE?
« on: July 07, 2021, 12:02:51 PM »

After the last upgrade to 4.1.3 triggers do not work at all? Will they be supported in the future or will we have to go back to HSFX if we want to use them in mission building? Thanks in advance. 8)

I'm sure they could still work but at the same time I'm not really sure. The last time I tried on using triggers was when I was making a He-111 night raid mission which you could find at the "Tores Single Missions" forum on page 8 reply #93. I tried using the message for triggers but for some weird reason it doesn't show up at the right spot but it only showed up when I was about to land which seems odd. I'd like to know why though.  :-X

Triggers all working perfectly in BAT 4.1.3. Just checked. Single mission off-line. (I assume that you mean BAT?).

Tests were done with a ship to fire the trigger. No problems, all behaved as advertised. I don't indulge in multi-player so not sure about that aspect.

multi-player
In multiplayer, triggers don't work as advertised even in their "original" HSFX implementation.
We've been investigating a lot on this aspect when we tried to port triggers to Ultrapack, and the conclusion was that HSFX triggers are seriously limited and partly flawed by design when it comes to multiplayer usage.

I'll second what Storebror stated.  Our little coop group uses HSFX exclusively for online with Triggers, however, certain Triggers definitely don't work online.  From what we've been able to determine (only some experimenting), generally speaking, if the Trigger involves a 'stationary' object (i.e. a light appearing, or smoke appearing) it won't work online. The same "Apparition" trigger with a moving aircraft or moving vehicle spawning however worked OK online (i.e. a flight shows up or a vehicle column shows up at the appropriate spot etc).  We've also used the "reporting" Trigger online with no issue (i.e. an enemy aircraft enters a Trigger area and all players see the message).  Prior to switching to the Command and Control mod by Checkyersix we were using that type of Trigger online to simulate air search radars to decent effect.
I have the latest and greatest BAT but have not tried mixing C&C objects with Trigger objects as yet but expect that some of the online issues may still be there.  I know that the C&C objects such as the SAR object which would crash in HSFX works flawlessly in BAT...again only offline.

I can get a text message to work, but not  aircraft to appear, and when they do they show up without engines running gear down and crash. Or on runway without starting engine. Sometimes the trigger activates without flying through the trigger zone. For me it is just not stable enough, but I would like to use them. Thanks all for the discussion.

I confirm that triggers should work online at least on HSFX (I haven't tried whistler's porting to BAT yet). They were included in HSFX to work with SEOW. As tomoose say, the only multiplayer limitation at the moment is that it's not possible to make any ground object appear in multiplayer. This limitation is due to IL2 multiplayer code that didn't allow spawning objects dynamically through the network other than aircrafts.
Apart from that the triggers should work online without problems.

That limitation doesn't exist, it's rather due to the way HSFX implemented the triggers that they couldn't spawn anything but aircraft.
As for the online issues, we've been testing triggers heavily and one of the weird glitches I remember is that when you try to set the altitude limits pretty low (i.e. to trigger something when an aircraft crashes), triggers seem to randomly fire or not at will, sometimes fire multiple times where they should fire only once etc. pp.
We've seen all kind of weird behaviour online - the most simple stuff (like showing a message when a group of aircraft cruises into a large predefined region) does work though.
