Grumman F2F-2  "Barrel Cat"

The F2F had been successfully introduced with the USN in 1935 and while being overall larger and heavier than the tiny Sparrowhawk, it only had a 10% larger footprint in storage from the onset. It looked promising enough for the Navy to order a study to reduce weight and maybe cut some span. The result was the F2F-2. Grumman shaved off additional strengthening from the carrier borne fighter type, as the strain on the airframe during operations from the airships was negligible in comparison. This more than compensated for the addition of the Skyhook and a the upper wings could be shortened just enough to fit the hangar without too much rework on the airships. Nine examples were eventually built.

During the major refit works in early 1936, first the Macon, then the Akron (immediately after her return from her Olympic visit to Berlin in August) received hangar modifications to accommodate up to four F2F-2 "Barrel Cat" fighters to replace the aging F9C.

* before you google, this is a work of fiction....

Progressing with the paintjob...

I have sketched and painted and discarded the ribbing four times by now but I think five is the charm and is going to stay:

I am also a lot more satisfied with the water reclaimers now.

Details added:
new 3-bladed props and oil coolers as they were on the Macon.
ground crew holding rails to cabin and lower stabilizer added, but that's too small to see anyway

Thanks to Storebror's help, it now also features several .50cal defense positions.

This is a most welcome project. The "Flying Carriers" have always fascinated me. My whole hearted thanks to all involved.
