can I get some info on editing IL2 BAT skins in Gimp2?
« on: May 18, 2021, 10:59:23 AM »

Need some help guys... I have been doing some simple editing of some paint skins we use in some online mission in our squad.  All i need to do is add the pilot's name under the cockpit on both sides of the plane. So basically I open the skin.bmp file in Gimp2 and add a text layer or two and then flatten the image and export it as a *.bmp.  But sometimes the *.bmp is 3Mb in size and I want to get it down to 1Mb. Sometimes when I do that the *.bmp does not show up in the plane viewer preview window.  So what do I need to save these *.bmp's as? 24 bit? 32 Bit? in 256 colors? in RGB? not really sure what works best for size and viewing on line.  Any help is appreciated.

Hi Rudo,

To convert a skin to 1mb from 3mb is no issue, select the ''Indexed'' setting when you're converting it from RGB. Photoshop and Gimp both use this feature, also for a heads up if you're using a template like the He-100 skins I released today the template resolution is 2048x2048. Usually to get around this you change the resolution in the settings and take the res down to 1024x1024.

Happy skinning and I hope you have good results.

Hey there,

Yea, I had the same problem long ago before I figured it out, as BlackAce said the image needs to be indexed before saved. Let me show you some screenshots on how you should do it (hope you don't mind the settings in Romanian):

First the skin needs to be 1024x1024, then you go to Image->Mode->Indexed

Then you convert it, don't change anything in this window

When exporting the image this message should show up, with "Alpha channel will be ignored"

Then before exporting make sure you check this setting "Do not write color space information", if you don't do it the skin will not show up. At least this is how it works for me.

After this you're good to go :)

Thanks for positing the screenshots Alin A. this helps immensely. Also thanks to BlackAce for his advice.  Now I have them the size I need.
