Spotting targets at a distance - bigger dots?
« on: October 04, 2020, 02:02:41 PM »

Dear Comrades,

Is there a way to change how the game displays a distant aircraft? Instead of a single pixel, a blurred dot or something?
I play in a high resolution but small screen (the pixels are very small), so I have resorted to using greyed out icons (the "icons.rcu" file). What is lame about it is that I can't avoid having the exact distance from my target, which makes the game a little bit too easy.

Anyway, I can already enjoy the game as it is.

There is available a key binding slot to toggle between several icon display formats. You can select between one or more of: distance, type and ID. I always display only ID; never distance nor type.

Moreover, you have further control of this via the console command mpdotrange (or something like it). You can set distances for the display of each of the icon parameters, for friend and foe separately. And you can create line entries encapsulating your desired settings in the files .rc and icons.rcu.

I'm on my phone, away from the computer, and so can't go into more detail...

As to the distant aircraft dots. I seem to remember that they're actually a group of 4 pixels, the upper 2 being of a lighter tone. You can verify this by taking a screen shot and enlarging such a dot in a suitable image viewing utility.

I dont know if the construction of these dots is set outside of an inaccessible (to us modders) DLL. It may require TD to make an alteration in this department.

The mpdotrange console command allows to define a symbol to accompany distant dots, out to as far as 25km. I use an asterisk (*).

Furthermore, the font I use for icons is as small as I can get away with and still be readable. For my 2560 pixel wide screen, it's 8 point. And for the .mat file for that particular font, I have set partial transparency, so that the characters partly blend with the scenery and thereby appear as less obtrusive.

Thanks for the response!
Of course... It should be obvious but I didn't notice, I could have just set the RANGE to 0.01 of mp_dotrange so it doesn't appear. (toggling ingame isn't enough because it's always range plus something  - options are range, range+type, range+type+id),

But what is the command you used so an asterisk appears? should I just type 'asterisk 15.0'? You have a nice solution there.

Never mind I found the ALTICON setting. Thanks once again!
