The Leander class was a class of eight light cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the early 1930s and saw service in all theatres of WWII.
This is the first of the Royal Navy Pack. Other ships will be added as they become available.
Devonshire was one of 15 County Class heavy cruisers built between the wars and designed within the limits of the 1922 Washington Treaty. They were designed primarily for trade route protection with an emphasis on range and speed.
The Vampire was one of the V Class Destroyers dating from WW1. They, along with the very similar W Class, represented the ultimate in destroyer design in WW1 and set the trend for future designs. 23 V Class were built along with a further 21 W Class. They went on to serve both as fleet and convoy escorts in WW2. Vampire was one of four transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in 1933.
Nelson was the name ship of her class of two battleships, built within the restrictions of the Washington Treaty. They were unique in appearance for the Royal Navy, the grouping of the main 16in turrets resulted in a weight saving sufficient to stay within the treaty limits. Nelson and her sister ship Rodney saw action in all the main theatres of the war in Europe. Her appearance represents the AA armament of 1943 and onwards, as she appeared Operation Torch, and Husky and subsequently for the Salerno landings and Normandy. Her sister ship HMS Rodney is also included. Rodney has a number of differences including a catapult mounted on C turret.
Hermes was the first purpose designed aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy rather than converted from an existing ship. She was active throughout the 20's and 30's and although close to obsolete by the start of WWII was pressed into action hunting surface raiders amd providing convoy protection. She was unfortunately caught by the IJN raid into the Indian Ocean in 1942 and sunk off the coast of Ceylon. The flight deck featured a hump at the stern which originally provided anchor points for longitudinal arrestor cables, the use of which preceded the adoption of tranverse cables. This serves a bit like a speed hump when in the landing approach, so don't come in too low.
