Shipping missions pdf guide
« on: December 16, 2019, 08:16:27 AM »

Stemming from personal preference and interest, most of my missions in BAT lie in the maritime field. Obviously this requires a specific area of knowledge for mission building, and I found myself trawling the forums for information from a range of sources. For my own convenience I have combined this information into one document, enabling me to reference all the key elements easily.

It occurred to me that this may also be useful for others, and as a result I offer it here (pdf format). I would expect that most experienced mission builders already know this stuff, so I would view the guide as being primarily for beginners making their first maritime missions.

If you identify any glaring errors, or have any additional input which would be useful, please contact me and I will add it to the guide.

Yours,

Clive

cbradbury -  ;D Thank you very much for this. I've just spotted, at the very first glance, information I'd managed to forget over the years. Useful information as well.

Very useful guide, thank you.

A couple of hints from my side.
1. Ship's turn looks better if one puts more waypoints into a turn. Higher the speed, more waypoints are recommended. And should a mission maker desires to create the most realistic turn circle, there is information online as here for an example:
http://www.shipsbusiness.com/turning-circle.html
Nice large radius turns can bring more "atmosphere" if timed correctly with air attacks.

2. ROF and Skill. I'd recommend starting with ROF of about 10.0 and Skill Rookie and then if it's not pleasing, to move to "harder" settings, step by step. A combination of ROF below 5.0 and high skill can be absolutely lethal for anti-shipping air raid...
In coastal/port areas it makes sense to assign different ROFs and skills to ships underway, at anchor and berthed. Crews at anchor and at berth can be considered less vigilant and slower to react due to the rest or to involvement in other operations as unloading or simply because some men have gone ashore.

Nice ideas, Dimlee. I eventually hope to expand the appendix of the guide with a 'mission ideas' section. I'll add your suggestions in there - duly credited, of course!
