The Steam version (From experience) is I believe 4.12, so in my opinion sir it's alright to download it from steam...as from past experience I've had with the steam one you CAN mod it but it is very limited... 4.12.2 is a lot better to mod as you have probably seen jymp on our forum :) plus in my book as well as others it's also the most stable...

Welcome to our forum as well jymp, hopefully you'll find a mod which suits you, they're all fantastic and well engineered by our staff and modding legends alike!  8)

All the best sir,

Steam is one of the best solution for current 1946 purchase.
Another best choice is gog.com .
The prices are almost same between those 2 sites; about $ 9.99 .
And in holiday sale time, about 75 % off in both sites, too.

Game versions:
Steam --- 4.13.4m as default, 4.12.2m optional
gog --- 4.13.4m as default, 4.10m optional

Installing and modding is a bit easier with gog's one, but not so different about Steam's.

And so ..... when you prefer "Realistic 3D visuals" than "Realistic simulating flight characteristics and dynamics" ,
Gaijin Entertainment's "War Thunder" will be another choice for flying "Midway" and Pacific theater.
Even heavily modded, IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is 10 years old game ..... its 3D visual is poor .... flight simulator engine is better + all the aircrafts can be driven with the once payment, though.

...and when you prefer "Realistic 3D visuals" and "Realistic simulating flight characteristics and dynamics" and a modern 3D/game engine, go for IL-2 Great Battles aka "IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad".

No!

I suspect it only affects the Steam version:

When I start BoS and just want to fly a round "offline" and fucking Steam wants to load me data on my PC - but I am not able to prevent this load, there are only two possibilities:

Steam shit from the PC or the PC completely on the garbage.

Now rate what I have decided.

Thanks guys, I am interested in good 3d models & textures in Pacific theater, from what I'm reading the VP Mod pack with IL 2 1946 from Steam might be the way to go ??.

Should have told me before I bought BoX..  ::(

That aside, I mean I love Steam personally, but if I bring it up, we'll go off topic. So far all good from my side on Steam but it is much better of an idea to get it off the IL-2 Site.
