Good to know it is working for you Piotrek and thank you very much for the kind words, really appreciated. 8)

The whole point in any form of art I think is to share it with those who like and have a interest in it, never did like the
thought of things kept in vaults or just on a private individuals hard drive, no fun in that. ;)

In between trying out a few missions in various installs you will be happy to know
I actually made a start on the engine parts:

This project is keeping me interested because it feels like I am making a large collection of smaller individual
models rather than one thing, each section has its own unique look.

Between each section usually it takes a while to make a start on the next, however, once you take the plunge
things develop a life of their own and it takes hold of you and makes you want to carry on through to the next
part of the project. ;)

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hi Pete,
Like the blancmange engine..lol

I appreciate you do the same and may have/seen these pics already, but here are some to possibly help the effort..

https://www.ulsteraviationsociety.org/thorneycroft-amazon-colescrane

Now this is interesting as this is the LWB version of the 7t TC crane, easy conversion for you if you fancy that, but shows the restored engine.

Also couple of (not too good) pics..

Cheers

Hello again Shessi, thank you very much for the links, really appreciated. 8)

I have one of the Salvu transport images, second one, and the long wheel base model as well.

Until you posted the link from Ireland of the restoration I had not realised that was a long wheel base version, in the link
I made available in the first page it is hard to tell, I actually thought they had two vehicles because I have seen similar
images to the one in your link but the number on the windscreen confirms they are the same vehicle.

The web page they provide from Belfast does not show some of the work shown in your link, it has moved forward and
is coming together quite nicely.

As for doing the long wheelbase that will have to be a project for another day, like the articulated vehicles, unless some
new modder with a 3d program wants to cut their teeth on stretching mine and adding the cupola in the roof, they are
welcome, that is why the WIP is posted up to hopefully encourage others to join in and post any further variants in their
own thread and/or paint new textures.

It seems to me the long wheelbase are actually army versions, certainly from photographs I have seen they all appear to
have some type of camouflaged, not sure on that though.

Anyway, work continues, the fan shroud and what I assume some type of water tank are shown:

Your image from the Irish restoration came at just the right moment as it gives me a shot from above, the
one in my image comes from the link in the first page and shows things from a lower viewpoint. ;)

Take care and be safe.

Hi Pete,
I'm not sure if you have all the TC crane walkround pics by Mr Molineaux, as your second pic is one of the series...if not, fantastic engine detail shots to use...

http://www.grubbyfingersshop.com/walkaround_galleries/Thornycroft%20Amazon%20RAF%20Recovery%20Crane%20UAS%202017/content/index.html

I've also never seen or noticed a LWB TC crane, but the 1/144 model above is depicted in RAF use, roundel on mudguard, so maybe all forces prob including the RN used them, as they were so capable for their size?

Re engine, yes on top the header tank and radiator, with radiator shroud. The tank/heater matrix on the side with grey water pipe, is possible taking hot water to a cab heater or even a hot drinking water tap?  Most water cooled tanks in WWII had this to allow brews/food to be made or for washing.

Cheers

Hello Shessi, the link you post is the same as at the start of the thread, dated 2017, the one you posted yesterday obviously contained more up to date images, looks like the team do not bother much with their original link but at least images are still to be found of the continuing restoration, maybe those photographs are from newer team members or invited guests.

The original link has been the source for nearly all the detail work so far, irrespective of the wheelbase much is the same although
the image you posted yesterday helped with the shape and positioning of the parts I just made today so all information is useful,
please keep posting images of what you come across it is surprising how each image can provide just that little something that is missing. 8)

Sorry, never noticed the roundel, blame my age, maybe I need new glasses or my attention span is waning. :-[ :D

The engine block mapped with some parts from previous areas used and modified to make the two top tanks and what
I assume would be the piston cover below them:

Not very good with the naming convention for the truck parts as you can tell, I spent many years in the
traction industry so more used to trains and their parts. :o

Hello guys, not done much over the last few days but here it is. ;)

The engine fan has quite wide blades that are rotated slightly, here is my effort:

Because there are moving and static versions I thought I would try and make a part to represent the
rotating one:

I messed around for days trying to use alpha channels for this but was unsuccessful in doing what I envisioned,
the idea was to try and use a faint alpha colouring to produce the rotating blades but I could not replicate what
I did for the windows, there I used two different Grey colours on the alpha channel to get different shades with
the blades it would be visible or not with nowhere in between:

Maybe the glass mesh treats alpha shades differently and is set somehow in the mat file, anyway, I abandoned
that and just opted for a painted look in the end:

Maybe I am over complicating things with this and should just use the actual fan as in most cases it will be
obscured by the engine covers, I was trying to have it so the user could decide if the static vehicle in their
scene has the engine turned off or not.

Still unsure as to whether or not the crane uses a independent power system to do its job or if it requires
power from the Thorneycroft engine, so many questions still to answer. :D

Take care and be safe.

Hi Pete,
I think you'll find the crane is a twin or even a triple electrical motor powered crane.  Looking at the NI restored LWB TC crane, at the rear of the crane platform pics you'll see two large electric motors, and there may be a third buried in the middle(?).  They power, via UJ shafts to two small gearboxes to the front of the platform. It looks like the RHS one does the raising and lowering of the boom and the LHS one does the hook.
The possible middle third motor may swivel the crane platform, as there seems to be a small gearbox on the floor in the middle with a UJ shaft running to it. The electric motors would be powered from the main driving engine generator and batteries.

If you look at the underside pics all four of the rear wheels are driven and there doesn't appear to be any PTO drive to a hydraulic pump or gearbox there.

Cannot argue with your summation there Shessi, it does appear to be the case. ;)

I had a photograph that showed a large finned cylinder, reminded me of a industrial size electric motor, at the back of the cab somewhere between the cab and the crane deck but aligned at what I thought to be a rather odd angle, cannot find it now sorry to say, always the case.  Possibly it was off another project in the depot where the restoration is being done, it did not look like part of the drive but then if it had been disconnected who knows, if it was a motor it only made sense if it was used for providing some kind of energy transfer between the engine and the rear of the vehicle and that is why I wondered just how the crane was propelled.  There is another similar object in the link possibly under the crane deck but it is hard to tell.
As you point out there are ample devices on the crane itself to do the necessary work of lifting and powering and from what can be seen under the vehicle only the drive parts we would expect.

Anyway, I will stop trying to analyze things and just build from here on in. :D

Take care and be safe.

No, no Pete,
It's great asking questions and finding out things, very interesting (to some! lol), and we need things to keep the grey matter churning over, at this time.

A lot of people eat pizza, but most don't have a clue what goes in it or how to make one, we (and others) like to know why and how etc.....each to their own!

It would be interesting ito see f this could be made into a 3D printing model?

True enough Shessi, just not sure my Grey matter functions that well these days, maybe it never did. :D

Not sure about 3d printing my model, that is one for the experts to take a look at, I do not know much about it to be honest
although from what snippets of information I have seen it is certainly a wonderful invention, even helping with this current
pandemic as well by helping produce PPE. :o

Maybe you could pick up the Airfix model and do some super detailing using the references available to us in this thread. 8)

Anyhow, not much to report on my model, things are going really slowly, not sure exactly where to start on engine detail
or how much to include, I just keep looking at the photographs and leaving it for another day. :( o_O

But there is something, I added the fan spindle using some existing parts suitably adapted and the mapping
moved to the Thorneycroft template:

The mapping is extracted from the 3d program using Lithunwrap, here I am erasing the areas not wanted so
it can be merged into the map for all the other parts so far created:

And done:

I will do the pulley itself next and its belt then move on to the engine block parts. ;)

Take care and be safe.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Don't forget to remove the rotor from the distributor on the static models so they can not be used by German parachutists.
