best laptop?
« on: August 22, 2019, 09:12:04 AM »

Hi all,
I would like to purchase a laptop for use with IL2 1946 (BAT)
so much out there it's a bit confusing
Is a AMD processor with a Nvidia graphics or AMD RX graphics card ok?
or a Intel processor with a Nvidia grahics or AMD RX graphics card
Any positive advice would be very welcome
as laptops are not cheap and would not like to make a stupid purchase.
Many thanks edc1

The only thing you need to worry about is storage space as BAT takes up a good chunk of space. Il-2 1946 is a really old game, and my old laptop (i5 7th Gen and Intel Integrated Graphics) was able to run it very well.

The choice is ultimately yours, as in this case, it does not matter which processor you use and you are using a dedicated card.

One thing to be careful about is graphics cards.

I was given an expensive laptop with a Nvidia 1060 in it, thought all was good. Then i tried to do some rendering and it was terrible.

After digging into the details for quite a while I discovered that the machine had two graphics cards, the 1060 and an on motherboard IBM graphics card.

Although I had the machine setup to use the 1060, IT IS NOT CONNECTED TO THE DISPLAY !!!!!

When I called Present() the 1060 did all it's work and then used a DMA to move the backbuffer to the IBM card, which then copied it to the screen.

So I lost nearly all the advantages of the 1060 and there was nothing I could do about it.

The laptop is now a doorstop. (Literally !)

Another thing to consider is USB ports, if one is using many peripherals such as head-tracking, Teamspeak, rudder pedals etc.

Hi all,
Thanks for the info stainless I presume if I get an I7 processor
that has a built in graphics chip ,I can use the bios to switch this off,
so the machine uses the nvidia 1060 graphics card?
Nothing in life is simple anymore.
Cheers edc1

No idea as to your budget:

My main thought about laptops is you are stuck with what you get when you buy. No GPU upgrade path.

Edit: My thought being for future gaming.  I hold on to my systems for a long time though. Maybe a new flight sim will come out in the next 3-5 years ? We can hope?

you can force the computer to use the dedicated rather then integrated one dont disable it in the bios you set it in the nvidia  settings to use the dedicated card the part about it not using the card is only partly true the display is connected to both however the integrated card runs the basic part of the display but the computer uses the dedicated a bit like an overdrive in a car it kicks in during high power applications if its set to do so

Not always.

This HP laptop has no physical connection between the 1060 and the display, which is why it is something you should check.

Anything with more than 4 gigabytes of memory,as I have a computer with only 4gb memory (a toshiba laptop) and the game lags a bit with certain mod aircraft below about 400 m above the ground.
