BAT 3.7 Le Grand Cirque

This pack is indeed GRAND! Maybe the biggest pack to date!
The eighth B.A.T. expansion set is filled to the brim with new content, maps, aircraft and general fixes and updates from the best mod makers for your pleasure and convenience.

The name of this expansion is an "imperialist" nod to the French modding group behind the IES mods posted here in the 4.09 "rebels" section who brought a spectacular number of new aircraft to life recently!
(... and if you haven't read Pierre Clostermann's book yet, go get it!)


What's new in the B.A.T. engine room?

There is one thing that is worth talking about because it will affect compatibility with older missions, even if those missions were made with a previous B.A.T.

As of now, there will be no more loadout denominations in BAT which contain spaces.

After some investigation due to error reports, this practice causes several inconveniences or outright bugs. The game does not properly understand these spaces and some functionalities can get out of sync when they interpret the space as a separating element, as it was originally designed to do.
So we have decided to clean up all loadout lists and remove the spaces. It is particularly significant in the JTW era with over 140 planes affected!

On the positive side, WAW is already clean since BAT 3.6, it never was a big issue there. TGA and DOF also are just minimally affected.

The downside result of a change in the loadout names is, that any mission, which is built with the old loadout names will not work anymore - you will get the “pink plane, blue horizon” or “explode on spawn” behaviour. It is easy to identify.

Fixing this is quite easy. We have decided on a simple convention: to replace the space with an underscore. Everyone can do this by editing an affected .mis file with a  text editor.

I will release fixed versions of all my BAT JTW campaigns over time and Whistler is already working on big mission packs that will be fully compatible!

The overall positive effect of in-game functionalities, multiplayer compatibilities and mission design options was considered the way to go.
We also ask modders to generally not do this at all anymore when releasing mods here on SAS

Do I need to install all the other Expansions to this point?
Yes. You need to have at least version B.A.T. 3.6 The Blitz for installation.

- Drop downs are considerably larger.
- New Flight Position drop down. Available roles are:
 Flight Leader (default) / Flight Wingman / Element Leader /Element Wingman
- Random Flights: Press the "Random" button and it will randomize the number of aircraft per
 flight, skill, planes, loadouts, country (now called Air Force). If you click Random in the
 main page, it will only randomize the first 8 Flights. If you click Random in the second
 ("Next" button) page, it will randomize all Flights in 16-Flights missions.
- You can now set any date from 01.01.1900 to present.
- New "Wind" drop down: wind direction, wind velocity, gust and turbulence values will be
 randomly set in accordance with the option selected.
- Removed aircraft categories when sort order is set to "Aphabetical".

About the "Parachutes" toggle:

Mission creators (not players) can decide whether pilots / crew bail out or not. There's a tick
box for each flight in FMB. Parachutes, according to benitomuso, impact FPS. When the option is
disabled, pilots / crew won't bail out (they crash with the plane) and therefore there won't be
parachutes around eating resources. I left the "Parachutes On" option in QMB because players can
configure up to 64 aircraft and it can be useful but I opted to remove the option from campaigns
and single missions to respect mission-creator decisions.

 :: SINGLE MISSIONS ::

Players can now have different missions in different folders
(thinking of modular installs such as B.A.T.)

- THE RULES -

1) The stock "Missions/Single" folder is sacred. Do not delete it. Do not rename it. The
 "Missions/Single" folder stores backgrounds and other files. The built-in LastMission.mis gets
 saved to your "Missions/Single" folder.

2) You can create as many new "Missions/Single*" folders as you like. The only rule being new
 folders must begin with "Single". Valid Examples:

- Mission/SingleNew
- Mission/Single New
- Mission/Single (New)

You do not need to create "Country" folders if you don't have missions for that country. Mission
files and mission folders can have spaces. Mission files must be inside their own Mission folder
and the Mission folder must be inside a Country folder:

- Right: Mission/Single New/RU/My Missions/This Mission.mis
- Wrong: Mission/Single New/RU/This Mission.mis (you won't see this mission)

The "Titles" toggle will switch between mission names and mission filenames.
The "Random" button will select a mission at random. Nice feature for a sortie.

Modified Zeppelin Flighmodel.
Previously the IL-2 Zeppelins were able to outrun their pursuers.
Now they have limited top speed at 115 - 120 km/h. It is possible to set it to lower speeds now, 80 - 100 km/h and tops around 120 km/h. This allows more realistic intercept missions as in reality, Zeppelins rarely got over 100 km/h.

It is still nowhere near "realistic" from a player point of view but will allow better use of the Zeppelin as AI opponents or eye candy.
But maybe there's more java development in the future.

- front top turret aiming bug fixed and turrets placed a little better in 3D

- wing floats now float on water
- major flight model update (needed for float fix) with realistic wing area, weight and engine power to give a lot more realistic behaviour without issues in flying from sea and land
- some ground collision bugs fixed like tail breaking off unexpectedly in rough land landing

Hudson:
- major ground collision issues fixed
- nose no longer damaged in plane selection window

Helldiver family:
- visibility distance increased and LOD values adjusted for small parts
- too small engine in external model scaled up close to realistic size
- ordnance hook normalization fixed so that hier.him scaling doesn't cause misaligned bombs and gunfire anymore
- new wing hitboxes to fix some major shape and placement issues
- black wall removed from pedal area in cockpit

Seafury:
- new 3D model to replace old frankenplane (credits: 101tfs https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,26690.msg384085.html#msg384085 (3D model) and snoopy (default skin))

Vultee Vengeance:
- Birdman's fix pack included ( https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,41680.msg500105.html#msg500105 )
    - ground collision fixed (_Clip hook positions)
    - fuel leak and fire positions fixed
    - WingROutCAP fixed
    - visual engine damage works now
    - center position adjusted for more realistic movement in air and on ground
    - some hier.him bugs fixed
    - some LOD values optimized (looks OK now at all distances but still no LODs, unfortunately)
    - material of damaged parts changed from Matt to Gloss to fix different lighting of damaged parts
    - tail hitbox fixed so that rear gunner won't damage tail anymore unnecessarily

Avia Bk-534:
- LOD bug fix
- engine exhaust effects fixed (credits: didn't find this exhaust effect fix mod yet, but not mine, maybe part of original exhaust flame mod)

B-239:
- missing external 3D update added (credits: PA_Jeronimo https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25142.0.html and Birdman)

Bf 109 B/C/D:
- external 3D fix added that is included in vpmedia's damage textures https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25041.0.html but was missing although vpmedia's damage textures are already used for these planes (credits: Birdman for this fix)
  - LOD and damage materials optimized so that damage looks nice
  - alpha holes no longer appear that aren't compatible with vpmedia's new damage textures
  - wing guns of E version completely removed in all LODs
- old mid wing leading edge smoothing fix added from DBW for light damage
- alpha hole fix added for control surfaces also that weren't originally included
- damaged keel overlays adapted to style used in BAT

Ba.65 family:
- center position of 3D model adjusted to fix falling on nose in take-off
- wings with leading edge slats can now get damaged
- gunsight aligned
- gear parts now attached to mid wing like surrounding structures so that it looks nice when wing is shot off in flight
- some other hier.him issues fixed like tail position in some versions

Ro.37bis:
- missing external 3D update added (credits: PA_Jeronimo https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25142.0.html )
- center position adjusted

Known issues:
- A-26 V1.1 update may be missing in classfile side and loadouts (at least in WAW module), so check that, but loadouts work now as well as before with updated loadout hooks
- A-26 hitbox fix is incomplete with tail hitbox still missing, some faulty names and other issues, but it's at least better than before and works fine as target
- VG-33 skins can only work fine with updated mapping or original mapping but not both
- gear of Ba.65 still attached to inner wing in classfile, so gear collapses on ground when inner wing is lost but not when mid wing is lost
- gunsight of Ro.37bis is still broken in BAT like before these fixes but works OK if this 3D update is added in some older game version
- this Bf 109 B/C/D 3D fix shouldn't be used without vpmedia's damage textures but should be used in BAT because vpmedia's damage textures are already included

Generally, complete fictional types are listed under *alterantive history* (example: Bf-109L, P-45) while projects that actually existed may be listed either under their airforce (example FM-1, Tomashevich Pegas) or in their nation's respective *1946* segment towards the end of the list, if it's a particular late war project (example: Ki-83, Ki-93)

The *Prototypes_Various* section is a bit of a wildcard, as it contains helicopters, arships and everything I am not quite sure about.

Absolutely STUNNING! What a flow of riches! Here comes aircraft I never thought would ever come to a combat flight sim, let alone one over ten years old. I mean, the Handley Page HP.42/45 - I nearly wetted my pants there. Thanks to all modders!  ;D ;D ;D

PS. The content of this game now surpasses everything I ever wished for. It is almost limitless: as a mission builder I can live on this, well almost for ever!
