What's a Polares ?
« on: November 16, 2017, 12:17:56 AM »

Lots of excellent work done at https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,57254.msg632778.html#new

I'm particularly interested in the Fokker D VII fix.....

"Fokker D.VII gets the jitters above 150km/h......       Wing Polares wrong, lift coefficient way too high...........   Reduce Wing Polares Lift coefficient from 0.23 to 0.13"

Would some kind soul tell me, in simple terms what Polares is/are

I googled it but all I got was Stars, Missiles and Gay slang...... :))

Cheers

I’m gonna take a shot in the dark here and say that this refers to polar curve. A polar curve is a graph which contrasts the sink rate of an aircraft with its horizontal speed. I think it is basically a way to graph glide ratio......I think.

Look up Polar Curve (Aerodynamics) and you should find a better explanation than I can give.

Crikey that was quick !

I'll do some research on  Polar Curve (Aerodynamics) when I'm back from work......

The new Fokker D VII is marvelous BTW  8)

Cheers

Apart from what James said (which is absolutely correct), "Polares" is a reference to a flight model section in IL-2 called that name.
You can see what some of the values in that Flight Model section do here:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,164.msg85693.html#msg85693

In case of the D.VII, the value "Cy0_0" was set to "0.23" which moves the whole wing's lift curve up a lot.
BAT Angels High Service Pack 2 reduces that value to "0.13" for the D.VII and everything flies sweet again.

Best regards - Mike

Fokker D.VII gets the jitters above 150km/h...

Iirc turning off 'flutter effect' in the difficulty options helps too.

Not in this case as the flutter effect will happen when speed is above vmax only, which would be 186.
