Whoa..awesome.. excellent detail.. obviously a lot of work and research.
Has anybody here ever set up a naval battle in a mission?
You could probably re-enact a small version of the Battle of Jutland in a mission with enough ships. but that's a LOT of modeling.
And of course you'd have to have flares and searchlights on the ships for the night action.

I've done simple, small naval battles, but they can be deceptively tricky to set up.  The ships essentially have no AI other than gunnery, so they won't maneuver to avoid collisions like tanks will and you have to be very careful with pathing.  I once watched an entire battle line sink itself when the lead ship was sunk and the other ships plowed into the wreck and sank in turn.  It was like some kind of super-sized highway pileup.

EDIT: found a screenshot of the clusterf*ck in question

NO QUOTE PICS !

OUTSTANDING!! I have messed with ship paths and waypoints to reenact the Battle of Savo Island off Guadalcanal..they definitely do not think about where to go and you have to tell them..but it's a kick when the salvos and splashes really get going.

What if......
Had an RAF Air Marshal, acting beyond his Authority,  ordered a raid to sink the Schleswig Holstein on her way to GDansk. A delay in the opening of WW2? a retaliatory strike from an unprepared Kriegsmarine, leading to a response from the French and British Bomber forces, weakening the fleet and making the invasion of Noway impossible? Even the Luftwaffe caught off guard?
Make a great mission, Hampdens or Wellingtons at low level I think.

Hi Ashe
I really like this beautifully crafted ship. Not only does it look realistic but it seems to perform realistically as well.

I particularly like the way the sinking characteristics work in relation to torpedo damage.
The ship rolls after severe lateral damage to the hull. This is much more realistic than what is displayed by much of the IL2 Fleet. Most ships display a rather pronounced pitch up of the stern or bow, regardless of where the hull damage occurs.

I notice that the Schleswig Holstein hull damage parameters are as follows;

[SchleswigHolstein:Part0]
BaseChunk Hull1
strengthBasedOnThisSection strength_HullEnorm
Vital
 damageDepth   0.4
 damagePitch  -4.0
 damageRoll    6.0
 damageTime  164.0

[SchleswigHolstein:Part1]
BaseChunk Hull2
strengthBasedOnThisSection strength_HullEnorm
Vital
 damageDepth   0.4
 damagePitch   0.0
 damageRoll    6.0
 damageTime  160.0

[SchleswigHolstein:Part2]
BaseChunk Hull3
strengthBasedOnThisSection strength_HullEnorm
Vital
 damageDepth   0.4
 damagePitch   4.0
 damageRoll    6.0
 damageTime  166.0

I have tried to modify the sinking characteristics of other ships based on the pitch and roll ratios above, but can't duplicate the heavy list and rolling over.

Looking at historical evidence it seems that large warships were more likely to roll over after fatal torpedo damage.

Is there a way to make ships roll by modifying the ships.ini or is it "hard wired" into the design of the individual shipmod?

best regards
Mike

If the collision boxes are modeled correctly then adjusting the ships.ini text entries should have an effect on all ships.

Thanks, I'll continue experimenting to see if I can arrive at a set of pitch/roll settings that produce a rolling-over effect after severe torpedo damage.
Can you give me a clue about the damage numbers - are they in degrees? - and what is the best way to maximize the effects?
For example, all things being equal, should say damageRoll 12.0, produce twice the angle of roll as damageRoll 6.0?

The 3D image depicts the Schlesien and not the Schleswig-Holstein.
The forward superstructure bridge wing is different on the Schleswig-Holstein.
The GPM paper kit was based on the wrong plans. The GPM kit depicts the Schlesien.

Thanks for this. I guess I'll have to line up some planes to sink it. After all, that's why people make ships -;)

cheers

. Yes. It would be interesting to see some photo images to illustrate the differences.
