It may just be my incompetence, but does anyone else have a problem with getting the 3/3C airborne? They both seem seriously underpowered.

Historically, Mariners were not the spritliest performers...with full tanks they were rather heavy and known to need long take-off runs. In fact their rather bad flight characteristics with full tanks are thought to have at least contributed to the disappearance of the Mariner engaged in searching for Flight 19...

the curse of all planes is weight, each upgrade added more weight to the plane im not surprised the later ones are a bit hamstrung it was never meant to have a radar and all the stuff to support it in the first place
