Hey all,

I have a question and it's something I have run into but found a solution with a second template or merged one.

It's an issue I had with the Ta-152C when I first started skinning her. When I put the BMP image into the selected skin folder it goes in no problem, I go back into IL2 to see what it looks like, select the skin and it fails to appear.  :-X

Is this a resolution problem? Because many old templates have done this for a lot of aircraft since my mods have been getting far more enhanced. Nightshifters Spitfire XIV/Seafire template does this and I did the test and it did that which I just explained.

Is there any way this could be changed or will I be unable to skin the later Spitfire or Seafire types? As I feel they're in desperate need of some of my TLC in the skin shop.

All the best.

If you have the High Resolution Mod... I'm skipping my turn!
If you have the standard resolution then make sure your skin:
- 1024x1024
- 8bits indexed colors

And I guess you have to check the consistency of the folder name skins for the plane according to the given name in the air.ini line!

... yep, like Epervier says, if you don't have a Hi-Res mod, then make sure your skins are 1 Mb in size and 1024x1024, and also check that the skin folder of your plane is named correctly, that is the first name (left column) you see in your air.ini file ...

If the skin is Hi-Res and you can't see it in game, then use a prog to turn it from 2048x2048 to 1024x1024 and also from 24 bits to 8 bits ...

If you don't have such a prog and/or don't know how to do it, then upload the skins somewhere or show me where they are, and I'll do it for you ...  ;)

Some skins are 1024 x 1024 and are 3mb in size; decrease color depth to have final 1mb in size BMP.

... then make sure your skins are 1 Mb in size and 1024x1024
... and also from 24 bits to 8 bits ...

Right! :)

Now it makes sense, for starters I use BAT which has the HD mod installed already, The skin is 1024x1024, however the lowest I can get Nightshifters Spitfire XIV template is 16 bit. I need it to be 8 bit.

Would one of you please send me an edited version that IS to the specs? Because I tried downgrading it in Photoshop but it wasn't going under 16 bit. Resolution is no problem, the skin file created is fine (SeafireFMk45, SpitfireF21 etc.), it appears in the selection but does NOT appear on the model as stated.

So if any of you gents could send me a corrected NS XIV template that would be great.

Thankyou for such prompt replies and in depth detail.

All the best,

... well, I am, by far, no skinner myself, but are we talking about skins that need to be in 8 bit format, or templates ...?  :-X

If you need to turn a 24 bits skin (generally 3 Mb) into a 8 bit (1 Mb) one, then I know how to do it ...  ;)

If you need to turn a 16 bit template into a 8 bit one, then I don't know how to do it, and I am not even sure this should be done, as may be alpha layers etc will disappear in the process ...  :-X

... well, I suppose the template is in PSD format (PhotoShop), then I am sorry but I don't have PhotoShop, so I won't be able to open it, and I still don't see the goal of downsizing a template from 24 to 8 bits...  :-X

It's the skins not the template Mick. :)

The template is too high in detail to downgrade and also I want to keep the detail. The skins end up 16 bit with 2mb in size, too much for the sim to cope with, I have the HD mod installed in BAT so its not that.
