Jet Age Helicopters: Uncontrollable jitter
« on: April 24, 2017, 12:05:58 PM »

Hello. I've come into this issue and cannot seem to solve it. Whenever I try to pilot a helicopter, whichever it is, it spazzes out from side to side and inverts, and sometimes even explodes midair. The BAT install is fresh and complete (As in, all the expansions are installed). I don't have any other mods, and I think I had the same issue in CUP back in the day. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a log excerpt could help understanding your problem!

I'm trying to post it, but the website keeps saying I'm trying to post a link to an external site. EDIT: It seems like it only happens when I try to use the hashtag to make it into code

Since it won't let me put the log text as code, I have to put it as an image, sorry. I don't want to delete something from the text in case I blunder it up.

The helicopter in question is the H-19 Chickasaw

I've been testing things out. It happens with the following helicopters:

-Bell 47 Souix
-Sikorsky UH-19D, HRS-3, CH-34 and SH-34
-Wessex HAR3 and HU5
-Mi-4

In all of them it's the same thing. THe helicpoter starts to have spasms, turn upside down all of a sudden and most of the time explode in the air.

Helis are tricky to fly, I mean, what exactly is "spazzing out"?

is it failing due to improper handling on your part or too high speeds maybe? Or is it a spawn error?

I am no real expert but I can see a loadout error message about a weapon set not registered with F4F3.

It means that the helicopter just suddenly starts shaking on spawn, without any input on my part, and it even flips upside down in an impossible speed. Sometimes is blows up in a mere second.

Sadly, that is as good as it gets. IL2 is not designed for helicopters. You have to go easy on the throttle and gentle with the controls.

Throttle acts like the collective and the joystick alters the swash plate angle giving directional tilt. The rudder alters the power to the tail rotor.

Beyond that it is all about practice (lots of practice) and restraint. They are not for the impatient or those with a low boredom threshold.  ;)

Be aware, these are a mere curiosity and very few can fly these at all, let alone accurately........

Ah, darn. Then I'll just forget about them altogether and move on.

they are indeed a very good practice in patience and restraint :)

but they can be fun to master! airstart is bad to learn the ropes. make your own little test mission in FMB and practice take off, rounds and landing again. That alone keeps you occupied and when you actually manage a full round and landing, you feel thoroughly rewarded :)

Yeah, like GJE said, they're tricky to fly. I personally enjoy them because of the challenge, but it's not a challenge for those who aren't willing to crash countless times in order to "sort of" master.

For anyone who does like helos in Il-2, landing one on a ship is probably one of the best feelings ever, honestly.

Don't give up on them X!

They are indeed tricky but can offer some interesting and unique gameplay opportunities! In the past, my 3 brothers and I have created missions where two players would fly the Uh-19, or Bell 47, and two others would operate a drive-able jeep, or MiG 15. The two helocopter pilots would have to rescue the downed pilot from the Command and control mod, while avoiding enemy contact and hidden AA nests. Tricky missions but quite fun.
