Monty's Spanish Civil War in B.A.T. - The Golden Age

Conversion of old material was not as interesting to me as writing it all out fresh.  We have all looked at mods and maps and some of the mechanics of illustrating the Spanish Civil War.  However, the efforts so far have yielded relatively few missions and barely scratched the surface with regard to the total picture, especially material rendered for the highest standards of the modern game, such as B.A.T. - The Golden Age.  Our dear friend Poltava has come closest and it is certainly to be wished that he continues his work with his wonderful writing and unique style applied to the very best version of the modded game.

Research into the political situation, local and global, aircraft supply, service dates and numbers, balance of power, logistics, geography, mythology, art, social attitudes and repercussions; indicated the need to highlight at least 20 air battles and campaigns associated with major offensives.  Divided among the main protagonists this would require 48 campaigns to tell a more complete story with regard to the Spanish Civil War.

This is quite a big task when you consider these will have to be all new campaigns, written for the unique features of B.A.T.  New features which bring fresh life to our aging sim and immerse the player with the kind of depth and detail that only IL2 B.A.T. can offer.

MOSCAS OVER MADRID
Battle for Madrid - November 8th, 1936
The two squadrons of I-16s that joined the Battle for Madrid were soon seen to perform far better than the Nationalist Fiat CR.32 Freccia.

THE CORUNNA ROAD
Battle of the Corunna Road - Nov' 29th, 1936
General Franco decides to encircle the city from the north-west in order to cut off water and electricity supplies from the Sierra de Guadarrama.  The Republican Moscas must fly again in the defence of Madrid.

THE VILLARREAL OFFENSIVE
The Villarreal Offensive - December 2nd, 1936
In a bid to relieve the pressure on Madrid the new Basque Army plans to occupy Vitoria.  The Nationalist garrison at Villarreal offers the only resistance.

********************************

********************************

THE LEGION CONDOR

CUTTING THE CORD

Battle of Corunna Road - November 29th, 1936
While a failure as a fighter, the Heinkel He51 proved very successful as a ground-attack aircraft, being used by Wolfram von Richthofen to develop the close air support tactics later used by the Luftwaffe in World War II

ANGELITOS OF CORUNNA
Battle of Corunna Road - November 29th, 1936
The Henschel Hs123A entered service with StG 162 in the Autumn of 1936.  Despite its apparent short-comings as a pure fighter aircraft the 'Angelito', as it became known, achieved great success in the ground attack role.

********************************

AVIAZIONE LEGIONARIA

FRECCIAS OVER MADRID

Battle for Madrid - November 8th, 1936
The Fiat CR32 proved a formidable adversary to the Soviet supplied fighters of the Spanish Republican Air Force.

THE ROAD WARRIORS
Battle of Corunna Road - November 29th, 1936
The Freccias are in action again as the focus of the Battle for Madrid shifts from the city itself to vital roads that comprise the supply lifeline for the capital.

THE BALEARIC FALCONS
Battle of Corunna Road - November 29th, 1936
The full force of Nationalist air power is applied.  The Republican air defences have improved and Italian bomber pilots must run the gauntlet!

Thank you!  It is difficult to approach all sides dispassionately.  Today's point of view, and modern filters, do not necessarily apply either.  But the historical context is fascinating and the flying is wonderful.

Make sure you are boosted all the way to Expansion Pack Eight.  ;D

Dear Simon,

First thanks once again for such a splendid work and dedication. I shall revisit the SCW TGA Campaigns as soon as I have enjoyed every bit of the DOF campaigns. Can't wait!

While you are working on these SCW campaigns, isn't this a good time to update some maps of Spain? C.U.P. and B.A.T. implement old versions of the Central, Northern, Northeast and Southern maps by RedEye_Jir. B.A.T. Spanish maps lack hundreds of symbolic buildings, improved neighborhoods and terrain features that have been available for long time now elsewhere...

Have a look in example at San Sebastian in B.A.T:

Now compare this same spot in UltraSpain, the church, the surrounding buildings, the port, the islet!

There are hundreds of improvements and lots of NEW TARGETS in all cities in these improved maps and they have been available for quite some time in the UltraSpain pack for 4.12:

http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=39320.0

There is also an UltraSpain expansion with even more additional objects that can be found here (site in spanish, google translate to the rescue):

http://patrulla-azul.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5296

More information can be found in the RedEye_Jir blog (Once again in spanish, but the pictures and videos speak for themselves):

http://redeyerij.blogspot.com.es/

It is a pity to leave all these improvements behind now that the Spanish Civil War is going strong in B.A.T.!

Cheers.

Have to say, having never flown a Bulldog campaign before, I just had to try Bulldogs of San Sebastian for my first test of the new TGA campaigns.

Had to slow down to avoid a truck while taxiing to the downwind end of the runway, but this was certainly no problem, just a matter of happenstance. (Took a course once, long ago, in defensive driving. Wish that truck driver had.) Also serendipitous: the enemy fighters had departed the potential combat zone before my flight arrived. Again, things like that happen; you have to play it where it lies. Otherwise, the mission worked perfectly, and I must say, the landscape around the home field is particularly nice. It's good to see trees instead of what look like layers of camouflage netting.

Once again, many thanks to Monty and the rest of the crew at Hangar 19.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Good find Whistler!  Technically, these map upgrades are not from the Ultraspain 412 Pack, but the further enhancement that is available at LA PATRULLA AZUL:

Ampliación de UltraSpain para la versión de Il2 4.12.2

The map enhancements from the Spanish community are excellent, with many new objects specially made for these maps.  Most of the material is essentially already there in B.A.T. and these improvements will comprise part of B.A.T. EXPANSION PACK NINE, which will be with us in two weeks tops.

From my B.A.T. today...

I have always wondered why they had been added before. I believe I had suggested that long time ago but anyway .... They important part is that it is going to be done and that BAT keep moving forward like a rolling stone. The whole community is very excited and thrilled. Thanks to Monty and company. :)

Lightning fast service Monty! Very lucky we are to have among us such friendly and committed team. New objects such as cathedrals and monuments will certainly serve as excellent reference points to support navigation and ground operations. Many thanks.

a picture is worth a thousand words I guess..  :)

hello,

I just have a little question about those great campaigns. Somehow it is possible to listen to music during a mission (so tell some briefings if I didn't missunderstood). Can anyone tell me how to activate it?

Thanks :)

Yes it is, and its a wonderful feature.  Setup control keys for 'Previous Beacon' and 'Next Beacon'.  I use _ and + because my throttle control handles all engines and these keys are free.

With these keys (or whatever you choose) mapped you are ready to go.  During any flight you may hit the keys to automatically tune into local radio stations, on the fly.  You need the requisite *.WAV files in place.  These are in ...Il2 BAT/Samples/Radio and were provided with your B.A.T. install (wasn't that nice).

You also need to activate the sound feature 'Play Music'.  This is VERY easy and can be reached at any time during flight by ESC to the menu/SOUND and throwing the 'Play Music' switch.

In game this is just the thing for those long lonely flights over the harsh mountains.  When the enemy appear and the fur starts to fly, switch frantically until the BEACON SELECT reads NONE - to turn your music off, or else enjoy a fabulous surreal dogfight to the sound of stirring marching music!

It is down to the mission builders to manually place the various beacons.  I like to put different ones in various locations to vary what you can pick up and where.  Anyone can do it of course.

For the Battle of Britain I also use this feature to play Vera Lynn over the cliffs of Dover.  Many of the German radio shows were also very entertaining and quite humerous at times.  Flicking through the stations is exactly what some of the young men might have done.  A friend of mine, who flew Phantom IIs in Vietnam, once told me how they took a portable stereo on interdiction missions and bombed the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the sound of Jimi Hendrix!

Thank you for your help and the nice story! :) But somehow it doesn't work for me. My soundlog says something like "ERROR !mp3 stream error samples/Music/Radio/Radio_Paris/BN_The Ink Spots - I'll Get By.wav" When I press the beacon keys nothing shows up on the screen and no sound is playing.

Its a bit frustrating at first but once you know the steps you will never look back.

Critical settings to check on Conf.ini

[sound]
SoundUse=1
SoundEngine=1
Speakers=1
Placement=0
MusState.takeoff=1
MusState.inflight=1
MusState.crash=1
Attenuation=5
SoundMode=1
SamplingRate=2
NumChannels=3
VoiceVolume=14
Channels=2
...there are others but these are the most important.

First principles - You must be able to confirm placement of the beacon objects in FMB, by you or a reliable mission builder who says they are there, ie; me  8) - they are not a 'standard' feature built into everything.

Second.  Confirm you have music playing.  The easiest way is to throw the 'play music' switch from the main menu and observe the menu music that is now constantly playing.

Music can be easily toggled on and off anywhere in the sim, even when in flight, but if the switch is off you will not hear the beacon music.

Thirdly.  Confirm in flight that when you select a Beacon a text indication displays your selection and demonstrates the keys are properly mapped and functioning.

...because one mis-step is easily made and usually enough to kybosch the whole feature.
