Over at FreeModding, Dr. Strangelove produced a modded, single classfile that gets rid of the gun flash illumination completely. I like it, because in many cases there are guns so positioned as to have it impossible for any flash therefrom to illuminate the interior whatsoever. I'd rather have no such lighting than suffer the ghastly inside lighting as though the aircraft hull were transparent.

I understand that the decompiled Java can have a single variable value altered so as to get back the illumination, but at an intensity the player desires. I've not tried this...

YES!  I didn't even know this existed but it's BADLY needed for some of the mods out there.
